Replaced alternator + battery

After 6.5 years and 76,000 miles the alternator (actually the voltage regulator portion) called it quits. New Motorcraft unit from Oreilleys was 228$, battery from walmart was 68$ (maxx-1). Install was stupid easy - even in the dark. I also replaced the serpentine belt while I was there (goodyear belt) which was also very easy.

I would double check if that is really a NEW unit. When I went to Napa, they wanted $225 for a Rebuilt one. Others around were about the same price for rebuilds. New from the stealership was $395.

My car's on it's 4th alternator in less than 9 months.... And sitting till I can afford a new one.... You just can't rebuild this alternator, I guess....

Wondering why you didn't go for the 5starford cobra 230 amp for $161.00? Mine's working fine so far. Also, EVERYBODY told me that ALL alternators for cars this old are REBUILT. It's just a matter of WHO rebuilt it! The Motorcraft ones have been rebuilt by their subs. If you ask for a NEW Motorcraft alt you're going to get one that's been rebuilt to factory specs.

RE: Replaced alternator + battery

Oops. Got me. So what on earth are you driving that needs 210 amps? That's huge.

RE: Replaced alternator + battery

Whe nmy stereo is complete I'm going to need all the juice I can give it...:) My alt died naturally at 100,000 miles, so instead of a new one or a rebuild, I just sent it in for an upgrade. However, the guy who is building it is having some problems with his suppliers, and it's over a month overdue. I haven't driven my car since January!

It is a new Motorcraft unit - Oreilleys is a parts store chain - I wanted to order one from Torrie and save 40$ but I needed the part asap and these guys had it in stock

RE: Replaced alternator + battery

Lifetime warranty I hope?

Thats what I got on mine for that price. (47k miles ago)

Torrie told me the one for $40 less was a refurb - done by M/C, but not new.

Just have the dealer do it even though its expensive went through several pep boys specials (alternators) for 225 but all bad had the stealership do it and they socked me for 600 bucks including labor but I have had no problems since so grudgingly its worth it.
