Requesting advice from Georgia and anyone else

I am requesting some advice from Georgia residents and anyone else who has experience in DMV rules.

On Jan 16th my son was in an accident in Savannah where he works and goes to school. He was driving my 1997 Oldsmobile Acheiva. The car is registered to me in the State of Kansas. The accident was not his fault and the other guy got the ticket. The other insurance company (USAA) would nor fix the car since the cost of fixing it would cost over 70% of what the car is worth, so they totaled the car. The car is driveable and the damage is not too bad. it looks worse that it is. My son still drives the thing! The steel skin is crumpled. The fender, hood and bumper need to be replaced and the pasenger door needs to be realigned. The bodyshop checked the car and the estimate with everything came up to an acceptable amount (less than the final settlement amount by about 400.00) and since the car has very low mileage, (64000 miles) we decided to buy the car back and fix it. Buyback amount was 300 dollars. Now I am hoping that this was not a mistake.

Needless to say, the car will be considered as salvage when USAA reports it to the DMV in Kansas.

Now here is the question. The car is registered in Kansas. I am not sure what we need to do in order to fix it and register it in the state of Georgia. Once the car is fixed, does anyone know what steps are needed to register the car in GA? We tried calling the DMV in KS and in GA but there is no answer... the phone rings and in GA it goes to a voice mailbox but nobody calls back. Web sites for the two states' DMV are confusing and seem contradictory.

Can a salvage car be registered in the state of Georgia? I am willing to sign the papers gifting the car to my son and sign whatever affidavit necessary as well.

Does the State of Georgia have inspection stations that need to inspect this car or any car prior to registration? There is no inspection in KS.

Does the bodyshop certify that the car is roadworthy or do I need to go to in independant ceritfication process?

Answers to these questions any any other details I might have missed are much appreciated. I need them to be prepared to deal with the DMV in KS and particularly in GA.

Is it better to junk a low mileage vehicle and just buy another vehicle with the insurance settlement, in this case.

Thanks in advance for any and all answers.

Be shure to read the inspection requirements carefully especially about the fact that the vehical can not be driven to the station if it requires and inspection. But must be towed there.

You drive the car there after they close in the night. You show up the next morning. "My friend has a towing buisness and towed it here last night after hours."

Problem solved.
