Reverse or Driveshaft?

T man

I was crusing in my Mark doing about 15mph in 2nd gear going deep into the throttle (not for acceleration since there is no power in that gear at that speed) to hear the motor purrrrr.

I pulled up to my girlfriends house and went to parallel park so I put it in reverse but it didn't move so I thought I might have a bump behind me or gutter w/e... So I pushed the throttle and the whole car just shook violently and smelt something burning (like plastic).

My pops had told me something about a screw in the driveshaft that it would occur in reverse and not forward but I have no clue what he was talking about and he's gone away for a while... Anyone know what he's talking about or is anyone just dead sure he's wrong?

There is nothing there relating to the driveshaft. When was the last time your fluid was changed? What color is it now and what does it smell like? Is it filled to capacity?

Not to long ago, its ruby red and smells its normal nasty smell... I was saying to myself too before I put it into reverse "man... This thing is shifting solid" lol.

Yeah, its filled to capacity.

I've never lost a gear before... Is it normal for the car to shake violently in reverse when its gone?

Whats Mlps?

Manual Lever Position Sensor

It sounds almost like it was in reverse and forward at the same time?

It's on the drivers side of the trans, there should be some stuff around here showing some pics.

A pic of the MLPS...

Could be a lot of things. More likely what jesse said I am guessing. But if it is bad you might have just lost reverse or there could be a pressure issue. Reverse is about 2x normal pressure for any other gear.

Didn't know that.

I have a leak so thats probibly it (unless that has nothing to do with the car shaking violently)... Luckily i've been saving for a rebuild... It just gets me that I made a comment about how SOLID it was shifting into gear 15 seconds before I went to parallel park. haha

He could have been talking about some of the spline'd shafts in the transmission but they don't fail very commonly at all.

First of all, an external leak won't cause your problem EXCEPT when you run the transmission low on fluid and it burns up or just doesn't engage.

First thing you do when the transmission is acting up.....check the fluid. Burnt smell, black? Redish pink and clean?

The burning smell (plastic) sounds to me like the T/C got burnt up, the clutches are slipping, and you heated up the trans to the point you smelt it.

Flooring it from a stand-still in 2nd gear will do that.

20mph not stand still :p And I was easing into... Not really slamming the converter, I just wanted to hear the exhaust purrrr haha

I went to go pick it up today and... Reverse worked!!! :D So now I have no clue... Maybe it was the sensor:confused:

The fluid is in great condition, the trans is actually a little over full.

Hopefully I'll have it rebuilt this month along with a header install unless I lose a bunch of money like last time

Any mods on that tranny?

Nothing except a tune that adds alot of pressure on the lines

If the tune adds pressure FULL TIME, that would explain a lot. B&M makes a device which does the same and is bad news on these trannies.

So i've heard. And yeah, i'm pretty sure its full time because before I blew a seal the 2-3 shift durring normal driving was so fast the drive belt would squeel across all the pullies. It was fun while it lasted though.

I would drop the pan and look for any sludge or anything. If u want throw a tiny magnet in the pan to see if it picks up anything.
