Right Runner Valve Stuck

When I bought the car the guy I bought it from told me that the runner valve in the intake was stuck in the open position. The car runs fine and performs well. I think that the intake needs to be replaced to repair the problem. Will this give me a problem in the future and what does the runner valves do anyway?

Not sure about the 2nd Gen, but on 1st Gen the runners stick out of the intake and can be turned manually with some pliers...depending on how stuck they are. If really stuck, you could break something.

You can also see if a SeaFoam treatment will free it up. I'd try that before trying to turn it manually.

Hopefully someone with better knowledge of the 2nd Gens will speak up.

More than likely it is stuck due to carbon build up. The Gen 2 IMRCs fail shut if the cable that pulls them open breaks. And since you only have one side that is giving you the CEL that all points the carbon build up causing the butterflies to stick in the open position. Like Wayne mentioned you will need to run some Sea Foam through the PCV to unstick them. If really serious carbon is present you will need to pull the intake and clean the IMRCs by hand. I have a 97 here that is that bad. The owner bent the linkage trying to unstick them by forcing them open with a screwdriver.

when i was at Autozone today dealing with my O2 soga i asked about seafoam and they me looked at me like i was crazy. :)~

what autozone did you enter, when i go into the autozone next door to my shop, the seafoam practically slaps you across the face when you walk inside. just look on the shelf that has all the lucas products and all the other crap, like bars stop leak and all that, its a white and red can and has a pic of an outboard boat motor on it.

Autozone is the Walmart of auto stores. The people usually don't know very much, they only carry standard parts, but they do have the best prices.

Kragen is a step up, Napa is best.

Unfortunately, pricing also increases accordingly.
