RE: Roof Rack

Yeah, just put the snowboard on top of a matress..:)

Doesn't the snowboard fit in the trunk?

My snow skis don't fit in the trunk so I just wrap the bindings and tips in thick towels and lay them on the console at an angle towards the passenger's seat.

I wouldn't reccomend a roof rack as it might scratch the paint.

RE: Roof Rack

I used to be able to fit a snowboard in the trunk of my thunderchicken. I thought the mark 8 trunk was deeper. Have you tried sticking it in the trunk at an angle?

Hahaha thats greatSo you guys dont think they make anything for the mark viii's

I have a Yakima roof rack that I use to carry my bike but it can also carry skis, etc.

You'll have to purchase one for a 96-97 Thunderbird. I was told its not listed as being available for a Mark VIII rack because they didn't test it on a Mark VIII but it uses the same towers and bars. I've used it several times and have had no problems with it and can put it on and take it off in under 10 minutes.
There are others out there like Thule but I really like Yakima brand, it seems so much more sturdy and the rack can lock to you car as well as lock the bike to the rack.

This is the only pic I have of the car with the rack on, not a great detailed pic, but you can see the rack on it.

RE: Roof Rack

Its really easy to mount on the car. You open the door and pull back the weather stripping at the top of the door and the Q-tower clip goes into the thin piece of metal that comes out about a quarter inch. The foot of the q-tower then sits on the roof. Its rubberized so it doesn't scratch the surface. No modification on the car or custom pieces.

This is the third Yakima rack on the third car I've had, I think they are solid, solid products and I never worry about someone stealing it since its locked onto the car and when my bike is on it, the bike is locked to the rack. I sound like a saleman for them but I'm not, I just think they have a really good product. I hated those bike carriers that you strap on to the back of your car/top of the truck.

You're just a sastified customer. ;)

We've grown so accustomed to mediocrity, it is rare to find a consumer product that functions so well. I call it a product of the 'Wal-Mart' syndrome. If Wal-Mart doesn't sell it, nobody else bothers to stock it. :B

haha, good point JP. I think you are right, we get used to "universal fit" parts and when something performs better we are shocked. ;)

RE: Roof Rack

I think you guys just gave me an idea as to how I can store mine for the winter and keep the load off the suspension.
:)

Don't forget to use the Lincoln recommended lift points and shut off your suspension switch.

Bud, I am going to lift it by the roof rack, but thanks for reminding me to turn off the air ride. :D

RE: Roof Rack

Roof racks are available. I've got the Thule version for mine. (www.thuleracks.com) I believe they did have it listed specifically for the Mark, although as stated earlier, it's the same as the T-bird and Cougar. It attaches by pulling back the rubber door-seal, and it clips to the flange behind it. It's quite secure. I have snowboard, canoe, and bicycle attachments for it. (bike is pictured) Expect to spend some money on this, ($300-$500 depending on attachments) but it's worth it. I've found that I tend to remove it from the Mark when I'm not using it as I feel the car looks better without it. I leave the one on my '86 Town Car, year-round.

Cheers!
