Rotors

Just wondering...Pep Boys want $57 for a Raybestos rotor and $17 for an off brand rotor. Is this a quality issue or is it a brand name issue?

get your rotors at Autozone. Two year warranty and they were not a lot of money.

Only buy them from Autozone if you just enjoy removing and replacing them every few thosand miles. Go to NAPA and get a set designed for the 96-98 models. A set of Ceramix pads are a good match for those rotors, but not necessary. Autozone is defiantely cheaper but many of their parts are cheap, imagine that. The warranty is wonderful, but who wants to be removing and replacing parts constantly. just my opinion.

Whats the deal on the Brembo cross drilled ones? I know you cant turn them but do they last?

If you are going with the stock size rotor, you will be offered no benefit from the "upgrade". In fact it has been noted in several posts that by drilling holes in the rotor you are essentially reducing the stopping surface by putting holes in the rotor. Now if you decide to upgrade to say a 13" rotor such as that found on the Cobra. then you are in effect adding more surface area. Of course this requires a caliper and hub upgrade as well, but the additional braking is worth it if you are serious about upgrading brakes. The holes in some models do not increase your breaking ability, but since you have increased the rotor diamater you have in effect done just that. A solid 13" rotor would be a better choice, based solely on performance, but they don't look as cool.

Their are applications where cross drilling the rotors are a benefit, but if memory serves me correctly it some high performance and racing vehicles. If you do a search their is a wealth if incformaion this very subject.

Kasper,

Thats what i remembered from a while back,, just wasnt sure mine are warped again... and a friend can get me the Brembo slotted or drilled dones for a few bucks more than Orielys rotors so wasnt sure if it was worth it.

RE: Rotors

I put Autozone rotors on the front of mine. They warped immediately. I was told they were warrantied, but I was told the warranty didn't cover warping. They did agree to resurface them for free. since then, they have lasted a long time. One reason they lasted is that i brake very gently now.

I replaced my F150's front rotors when I replaced the brakes at 80k. the originals never warped. I put cheap Advance Auto rotors on the front and they warped in less than 10k miles.

My advice is to NEVER BUY THE CHEAP ROTORS.

RE: Rotors

I know from experience that cheap pads not only make an a$$ load of dust but break. I had to stop fast when I got cut off and actually dissentegrated a rear pad. Since then I have replaced the pads and had the rotors turned (93-96 had thinner rotors and warped easily, 97-98 Lincoln upped the ante) and hardly no break dust with ceramic pads. If you have 1st gen and want to make an upgrade to stop the warping, then just grap a set of rotors from a 97-98.

RE: Rotors

There's been so many threads about this and such differences of opinion, but I'm going to add my experience.

First of all, I drive like a psychopath! Fast and hard. I used Ford rotors exclusively, trying both stock '94s and two sets of '98s. No matter what, I was replacing them every six months, like clockwork. They would end up warped or blue or both. There was no sense resurfacing them.

I finally had enough, and well over a year ago I put on four TRW "PowerStop" crossdrilled rotors with Wagner Thermoquiet semi-ceramic pads. Brake performance and pedal feel improved dramatically, but more importantly, I've gone 48,000KM (30,000 Miles) without any pulsation or brake fade. That's absolutely unprecedented for me.

TRW says these rotors can be turned. The only stipulation is that the holes be re-chamfered if a lot of meat gets taken off the rotor.

I'm not trying to say cross drilled are always better, but they certainly work for me!
