Roush introduces crate engine and transmission packages

Roush’s Ford in a Ford package mates a Roush crate engine with an automatic overdrive transmission.
It’s been several years since the Roush organization became involved with producing crate engines for the hot rod market, and during that period, the company’s offerings have grown from the typical 5.0 and Windsor-based fare to include more exotic FE series and late-model modular V-8s. Now Roush has taken the next step toward simplifying drivetrain swaps by creating the “Ford in a Ford” package, which mates a Roush crate engine with an automatic overdrive transmission and comes complete with all of the required hardware and calibration to facilitate installation.

The debut of the program was made using a Roush 511SRFE engine mated to a Ford 4R100 transmission, installed in a 1963 Ford Galaxie convertible. The engine is based on the FE-series and produces 525hp and 575-lbs.ft. of torque while the transmission is a late-model Ford unit with four forward speeds, including overdrive, and electronic controls. The package includes the control unit for the transmission along with the throttle position sensor, wiring harness, performance torque converter, and the calibration to make it work with the carbureted crate engine.

Bob Corn, Roush’s project manager for the program and a former Ford engineer from the Total Performance era, explained that the packages were conceived as a means of creating a “plug and play” approach to hot rod and custom muscle car building, allowing consumers to focus on the car and not the hassles of making the new engine and transmission work. There will soon be a full line of these powertrain packages available from Roush; check www.roushperformance.com, for details and updates.
