RPM Surge and Slightly Rough Idle

RE: RPM Surge and Slightly Rough Idle

Thanks for the info Jayhawk.

Is there an easy way to test the MAF? This problem is really more of an annoyance than anything. I’m not ready to spend the dough to take it to a shop. It hasn't gotten any worse.

Since my last posting I have looked for an air leak like driller suggested. The only thing I found that may be leaking is the hose coming up from the valve cover. The grommet in the valve cover is a little hogged out. I will replace it. Since the intake is two pieces I wonder if a seam is leaking. I didn’t get crazy figuring out a method to test the intake tube. I also douched the throttle body with TB cleaner. This helped smooth out the idle a little bit.

Thanks for the interest.

Have you had the electrical system checked?

The AC cycling stumble may be caused by a drop in voltage due to the increase in demand.

A marginal electrical system can cause very hard to diagnose problems,
which usually only appear under extreme loads.

Locally, the Canadian Tire Auto Centres will test your charging system for free.

Here's one more suggestion - and it just happened to fix my sometimes-rough idle. I noticed that the AC wasn't blowing super-cold air last summer, and a few weeks ago the air felt even less cold.

I added a can of 134a refrigerant & oil (without gauges - which is generally dumb), filling up the system until the compressor quit cycling.

Voila! My idle is back to being silky smooth, no surging, and the AC is *much* colder. Just a thought...

Guys, thanks for the input.

The electrical system checked out okay.

I have been researching the AC system. When this started it was pretty cool outside and the AC seemed to work ok. It got to almost 100 here a couple of weeks ago. The AC stumbled a few times and didn't seem to blow as cold as it should. I'll take it in and have the AC checked soon.
