Code 0174, Running too lean. Can be caused by dirty MAS element and or air leak bypassing MAS.

Anything else I should look for?

RE: Running Too Lean

Only other thing that comes to mind is a fuel delivery problem such as the fuel filter. But on your well-maintained fleet, highly doubtful. ;)

RE: Running Too Lean

I had a big problem sealing the intake tube to the throttle body. I had to RTV the rubber gasket to the intake tube to be sure it didn't slip during installation. Another popular leak possibility is the thin rubbber "T" over near the PCV valve. Could be that.

RE: Running Too Lean

This is a bigger question than you think!
Code 174 or OBDII code P0174 is BANK SPECIFIC. It means the lean condition has been detected on bank #2, cylinders 5,6,7,8. Bank 1 would be 171/P0171.

O2 sensor #1 on that side generating too little voltage.
O2 sensor wiring corroded or damaged.
Localized vacuum leak feeding one or more cylinders on that side.
Restricted fuel injector(s).
Internal injector malfunction(s).
Injector wiring.
Injector Drive programming within the PCM.
O2 monitoring strategy within the PCM.
Exhaust leaks before the O2 #1 sensor on that side....

...and so on...

RE: Running Too Lean

Humnmmm. I need to check the fuel filter anyway, so I'll that first.
It figures it ain't simple. I'll check for leaks on the passenger side of the motor real good. I've clean the MAS sensor but it still droping the same code.

If I cannot find a leak, I'll change out that side's O2 sensor and go from there.

Thanks.

RE: Running Too Lean

If I were to spin the lucky wheel, it might land on O2 sensors for me, too.

You're asking too vague a question. How does the car run? Has your fuel consumption increased? How do the spark plugs look? Has it lost power? Does it hesitate? What's your fuel pressure? What sort of voltages are the O2s producing? How fast does the voltage sweep?

If your post said, "Guess what colour socks I'm wearing?", you'd have a better chance of getting a definitive answer to that question.

RE: Running Too Lean

Hello, I just bought a 93 but I'm having problems with keeping it running. It cranks but will not run. I have replaced the plugs, wires, coils, fuel filter, the fuel pumps works. What could I be overlooking or do anyone have any idea what the problem could be.

RE: Running Too Lean

The car runs great. New plugs and wires. It just started thowing the code.

Do a search here for cam sensor.

sounds more like an air leak you might have broke one of the plastic vac lines or left something disconnected from doing the tuneup....

RE: Running Too Lean

The O2 sensor on the right did the trick.

Thanks guys.

By the way, is there some kind of reference book that one can buy that will give suggestions for repair of trouble codes?

RE: Running Too Lean

cardell 1 start a new thread we are here to help. I had a lean bank code from a chip once reset computer never saw it again? sounds like maybe old front o2 sensors should be replaced every 50 k or so in pairs. just because the check engine light comes on imho the owner should not panic the owner should check the routine maintenance items and update appropriatly. If it was my car with that code I would clean maf easy new o2 sensors based upon milage if applicable and then reset computer. you could just drop it off at a blue oval certified dealer they will get you squared away.

RE: Running Too Lean

I would like to apologize to anyone that has been offended by the above remarks or other posts that I have made refferring to some ford dealer service. I sent a pm to a moderator asking that the above post be removed. I had a bad experience at a dealer for a 5.0 motor swap I gave up after bringing it back 7 times they kept telling me you need this that and the other thing they cracked my intake manifold I had to find that left vacum lines disconnected broken etc. set the timing wrong twice reinstalled the old spark plugs with an impact rear main seal leaking after 5k . It looks like there are some people here that work for ford I apologize to you. You are obviously not the ones I dealt with.
