Sad News

I hope they finally pull the plug, enough of the re-badged cars already. Whats the point of Selling the Milan when its the same thing as a Fusion etc.

You wouldn't be so quick to say that if you were around in the 50's cruising in a lead sled Merc.

Glad to see Mercury go. There was no reason for them to exist. Now they can focus on Ford and Lincoln. Maybe they can make Lincoln a luxury brand again.

i agree there really wasn't a need for them..gotta cut down costs though....they would(if it happens) still be around if the ecomomy wasn't in the ****ter..

It's bad news for the Lincoln dealers. The number of Lincolns sold is low, and they need another car to sell. That's why they are Lincoln/Mercury dealers.

I guess now they can be Lincoln/Ford dealers, it was bound to happen. Mercurys were just rebadged Fords with a bit of an upgrade.

American car marques that were around that I remember that are now gone:

Plymouth
Oldsmobile
Pontiac
Saturn
Hummer

Soon to be: Mercury

The AMC car company long gone.
Chrysler is under foreign control again.

It makes sense. Seems like every car company is cutting costs, and like Plymouth and Dodge looking the same, Mercury was just a re-badged Ford. IMHO. I am sure the people making the decisions are aware of the low Lincoln sales, and have a plan to remedy it, or at least attempt to remedy it.

Just heard that there is no more Mercury. It's going the way of so many other name plates.

Yes. It is time

You wouldn't be so quick to say that if you were around in the 50's cruising in a lead sled Merc.

But that time has passed.

I am not glad to see Mercury go, but..

There was a reason.. Ford just lost sight of it.

Agreed!!

So now we can badge the Ford's with LFC or LFS Instead of Mercury. LOL

Mercury 's been gone in Canada since 1999. Only the Grand Marquis was available (Crown Vic is only sold to fleets - taxi, police etc). All the Lincoln/Mercury dealers became Ford/Lincoln.

Never really missed the Milan, Sable or Mountaineer, but going back a few years, the Cyclone GT, Cougar XR7 and Eliminator, the original Marauder, and the Turnpike Cruiser were all pretty cool cars.

Maybe they are assuming Mercury shoppers will move up to Lincolns or down to Fords.

Yes, Mercury had some nice cars. I like some of the differences between the Canadian and US models.

Remember the Canadian only Mercury truck?

Ford to eliminate Mercury brand
1 hr 25 mins ago

DETROIT (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F.N) will eliminate its Mercury brand which has seen sales and investment plunge in recent years, closing out a vehicle lineup created in the 1930s by Edsel Ford, the automaker said on Wednesday.

Ford declined to disclose the cost of eliminating the Mercury brand, but said it expected to shift those resources to expanding its Lincoln luxury brand and did not plan job cuts. Ford plans to cease Mercury production in the fourth quarter.

Mercury, established to serve as a bridge between the mass market Ford brand and Lincoln, has seen sales dwindle from a peak in the late 1970s. Its U.S. market share has been ebbing for several years and is now less than 1 percent.

The wind-down of Mercury, coupled with Ford's planned sale of its Volvo car unit to China's Geely (0175.HK), reduces Ford to just two brands like Toyota Motor Corp and further distances the automaker from its past multibrand strategy.

Ford said the Mercury decision would not change its forecast to be solidly profitable in 2010. The Ford board of directors approved the Mercury decision on Wednesday.
