self-exciting "one wire" alternators?

Does anyone have any experience with these self-exciting alternators? I'm looking at one as an option for my '72 Jeep. (258CI I6, 3speed manual)

Currently, it has an alternator (good) with an external regulator (bad) and a number of 37 year old wires that connect the two. I've found that I can get the regulator, but I don't know if I'd care to be chasing down wiring problems for the rest of my days. I've seen a few of these one-wire jobbies on the market, and it looks like it might be a good fit. I like the (implied) simplicity. Power output appears to be higher as well.

Any thoughts? does anyone have a good source? Quadratec seems like a good start, although theirs are a bit more expensive. JC Whitney has 'em for less, but I suspect there's a good reason for that...

Thanks!

Sure, I used one on my 48 Chevy pickup and my 47 Cadi - Both street rods with big stereos and air conditioning.

We use them all the time on misc. equipment at work. Stick with AC Delco and you should be fine.

Sounds great. Thanks for the input! I'll probably order one up today. I really don't have much for electrical demands. (headlights, blower motor, wipers, AM radio!) It just seems like a much more "elegant" solution to my problems.

Thanks again!
Mike

Be sure to use a HD fuse or a circuit breaker on the output of the alternator!

heh. Thanks. Now I will. I'd been pondering wether or not a breaker was necessary, and had more or less dismissed it. It seems like Jeep wasn't a fan of the things to begin with. (No fuse between the battery and the inside insturmentation!)

Maybe I'll get two. Thanks for the "push"
