Show me your subs?

I am trying to get a visual on building my box for my 98 and wondered if anyone can help me with that? I am going with 2 Massive 12's with a 2000 watt performance technique amp. 10's are no longer cutting it. Any pics would be helpful...Thanks

You can't fit 12s into the mark... unless you "tilt" them. If memory serves me right the trunk only clears 13.5" which doesn't leave enough room for enclosure.

I have had 3 different subwoofer systems in my marks.

My latest one was 3 10" kicker L7s with a kicker ZR1000 beast punching them... The fit perfect and I was able to push them all the way to the end of the trunk

I don't think I will go that big again...

My current vette has a single 12" Elemental Designs sub with the same ZR1000 amp. And produced plenty of punch.

I'd highly recommend going with a good quality sub/enclosure and a class D name brand amp.

I had 12" L7's in my trunk with no tilt, its all in how you cut the box. fit like a glove too, man i miss that bass. don't feel like cutting up the LS yet to modify it, the THX system is decent enough for now.

Awesome looking set of subs. That must really bump. Thanks for the pick. I am going ot relocate the stock amp and that should give me enough clearance for a good size box. Thanks for the pics

Ive seen a Mark out here where they cut the whole for the subs where the rear deck was and put 2 12's that was interesting. Anyways, it will all be about the cut, I agree. Thanks

that was going to be my next step before i sold the mark. You have to make sure the whole trunk is sealed off which would be a bit of a pain, but the subs i was looking at killed in IB so it would have been worth it. Each sub was 50 pounds so a ton of reinforcement would have been needed.

dont cut holes in the rear deck it will sound like garbage. i recently bought a 97 lsc someone did that too it was the most ghetto fabulous set up i ever saw. this is what i did in my 98 lsc, i actually made the box a certain way so it would clear the spare tire cover, and i removed the factory tray to get a little more height. i had to relocate the stock amp to the back of the box, i had two 10 inch kicker comp dvc's in my box.

Nice!!! Tell me tho....when you had them really THUMPING, did it make the air springs bounce the car up and down??? LOL

I can't find any pics, but the '93 has a single 12" dual voice-coil Elemental Design sub in a ported enclosure and the '96 has a pair of 10" Audiobahn subs. The 2 - 10" subs out-perform the single 12" sub.

I had a sealed enclosure for the 12" but wanted to try a ported box. It's marginally better but I think it needs a bigger enclosure to really perform up to par.

I have the amps in the '93 mounted to a carpeted shelf which is integral to a rear shock tower brace. Billcu tuned my setup in the '93 a couple years ago at one of the MI meets. :D

While they both sound good, neither are serious competition setups but both cars have won sound system awards at local shows. :)

Jamie

Is that a Mark VIII license plate? Also did you fiberglass the back or just use MDF? It looks awesome though? Thanks for the pic.

Driller-

Thanks for the info, I thought about the rear deck also and intended in making a fiberglass connection with the box made out of 3/4 MDF and replacing the spare tire cover with MDF as well. But odds are I will be going with a custom made box possibly fiberglass and mimicing Jamie with the relocation of the rear amp.

thanks for info and pics. Much appreciated.

it was a mark plate, just thumb tacked there, i didnt leave it there i actually had pulled the box out after my accident and recovered it in black leather but i cannot find pics, those are the pics i wanted to post, it wasnt fiberglassed , 100% mdf and sealed.

Properly done rear deck setup sounds spectacular. You need to reinforce the deck with MDF, and use proper free air speakers. Sealing it all is a bit of a challenge, but what isn't ;)
Can't beat the space and weight savings either. Here's a shot of work in progress in one of my old m8s. It's was definitely a quality over quantity type of sound.

Nice setup....and your not robbing to much trunk space.

i didnt mean to make it sound like it cant be done with a free air, but the though of cutting a hole in the rear deck, i am not one to cut holes that dont belong, but thats just me. i know people can do things right and clean, but the two marks i had in my shop that were cut OMG i cant begin to describe the trip to the E.R it would be if someone put their arms back there!!!!!

OK I have a ? about the factory amp. If you have replaced the head unit cant you just eleminate the JBL amp instead of relocating it?

yes you can, but to get sound to your cabin speakers you will need another amp, and run all new wiring. no big deal, just more time!

when i replaced my head unit, i rewired everything so the upper two door speakers are run off the head unit's front channel, and the other four speakers are run by a 250w amp, they're only split into two channels so the front/rear fade on my head unit mixes between the tweeters and the other 4. it was easy to do since i mounted the 250 to my sub box in the trunk, it was close enough to the factory amp's location i only had to extend a few wires

Thanks for the pic. I am really going to have to do the same thing with the stock amp and wiring up a new one. I will be done in a couple of weeks with my new box and I will post up a pic.

if you need me to take any measurements of mine just let me know, and also do you have the factory services manual? that was what i used to get all the colour coding for the factory amp
