tonight i was driving along and there was a loud clunk that sounded like it came from the rear end....then there was nothing and everything sounded fine. Then about a half hour ago same thing happened only I lost all power at 65mph put the car in neutral and started it everything fine but no gears. Put the car in gear and it will roll like it is in neurtal. If I step on the gas it clunks real hard and nothing happenes. Any Ideas as to what happened here im lost untill tomorrow when I can get the car home and then I really have no idea where to start.
thanks,
Zack

RE: something broke

Have you got any gear in the tranny that works? When was the last time you serviced your tranny or checked the fluid?

RE: something broke

1. I agree, it is one of the following:

a. Broken Drive Shaft u-joint
b. Transmission failure
c. broken pinion or ring gear

2. Does it make any kind of grinding noise when you push the vehicle in neutral?

3. Lift both rear wheels off the ground and turn the the wheels. Listen and look at the drive shaft and look at the connection point where the drive shaft and the differential meet. Make sure that the shaft is turing. If it is not, the problem is in the differential most likely. If the shaft turns with ease and you hear no bad noises, the problem is likely to be in the transmission.

4. Check to make sure you have enough fluid in the transmission and differential. ;)

RE: something broke

drive shaft and tranny are ok....looking into the rear end in the morn. I figure the pinion twisted off somehow because both half shafts look good.

RE: something broke

Well if you found out that the ring and pinion are toast I have a complete center section all setup with a traction lock and 4:30 gears with speedo gear for quick replacement, and I also have a brand new set of 4:10 gears sitting here.:) :)

RE: something broke

yeah tore into it today and the spider gears were demolished... tore everything up... i am getting a new rear end from a junkyard in the morn. and yes it would be great to get a trac. lock with 4.30s if you wanted to get rid of it i would definatly be willing to take it off your hands if it is affordable.
thanks

RE: something broke

So today I got all of my parts and fixed the car it ended up both CV axles were broken and the new rear end has the stock 3.08 gears so I will either set up a set of 4.56 gears with a spool in the old one or something along those lines. The only dragstrip around here is an 1/8 mile and i figure that gears that low will get the job done.

RE: something broke

I'm curious. Is your car modded or stock? What do you attribute the failure to?

RE: something broke

The car is basicly stock. I had 3.73 gears, the J-mod shift kit, dual exhaust and that is it. I have no idea as to how it failed the pin that goes threw the spider gears was broke in half and I have never heard of anything like that happening. The car shifts rather hard it chirps into 3rd gear at wot. The car just turned over to 173,000 miles a day or so after I fixed it. Really have no idea how it could have happened if you have any ideas that would be great so maybe it wont happen again.
Thanks,
Zack

I assume traction-lock differential with the 3.73s? Even still, it is odd. I don't have tons of miles on mine with 4.10s, but hundreds of hard launches with the Baumann shift kit{knock on wood}.

RE: something broke

Nope I dont have a trac-lock it is just open. I havent had a problem with it not spining both tires though. Im not sure how many miles were on my 3.73s maybe a few oil changes and a lot of hard launches and burnouts. I am 18 and I like to play a lot I slide corners and do burnouts and stuff so that probably had a good chance that helped tear up the spiders.
thanks

RE: something broke

It certainly could have, especially shock loading (i.e. sping ties on ice and then heading dry pavement). I did it in a brand new Camaro I had bought for my wife, had less than 100 miles on it an broke it. Took 6 weeks to get the parts from GM as they were stacked up with back orders on the parts.

RE: something broke

A camaro usually has a bit more torque than a mark 8, and a much weaker rear end.

I haven't heard of too many people blowing up their mark 8 rear ends. Might have just been a bad part, that eventually just let go.
