Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

HELP!! My spark plug wires are popping off my spark plugs while I am driving!! I recently changed my plugs and for the first time I am using the 8.5MM MSD wires and Autolite copper plugs gapped at .048. After they pop off, the plug wires are actually pushing against that cover that goes over the plug wires but still touching the plug. After this happens the car sputters or hesitates between 1,000-2,000 rpms.

I have changed my plugs and wires at least 5 times before this and never had this problem, but I always used either the blue mustang cobra wires or the gray Mark VIII wires.

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks!
Ken

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

According to MSD, the problem is related to a small breather hole, about the size of a large paper clip that is supposed to be in the top of each plug wire boot. If the whole isn't pushed all the way through the wire will pop out under enough presure.

I'll check to see if this is my problem tonight........hopefully this fixes the problem.

I called Geno on this one, and he knew the problem I was talking about, and gave me the Tech Support contact at MSD.......thanks Geno!!

Call 1-915-855-7123

MSD TECH LINES are open Monday thru Friday 8am to 5pm Mountain Standard Time and ask for Joe Lapalle, tell him Geno sent you and he will make it right.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

Send them back. They are notorious for this problem. They will gladly send you out another set.THey supossedly had this problem fixed three or four years ago.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

I cleared out this supposed ‘breather hole’ and that did NOT fix the problem. I must have defective wires. This is getting VERY annoying. So far I have spent about 7 hours over 3 different days trying to change my plugs and wires, and it is still NOT working right. Hopefully I’m not f’ing up my car by driving around with poorly connected wires......I don’t really have a choice.

Even if MSD does correct this problem, I don’t think I’ll be using their products again. Like I said above, I have used the blue cobra wires and gray Mark VIII wires the other 5 times I have replaced my plug wires with no problems whatsoever!

I'm calling MSD tech support again now :(

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

did you come up with anything on wires. I called and they said they is nothing they can do for me, but I didn't talk to joe so I may try and call back.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

I had to order and pay for a new set of wires through MSD. Then, after I replace the wires I'll have to send my old ones back with the reciepts and a note, all to Joe. I will then get credit for the second order when they receive my defective wires.

These wires have only been in my car for 2-3 weeks and one of those weeks it sat at Geno's shop waiting to get a new fuel pump. MSD really didn't have a choice on resolving my problem. Their product is defective and never worked.

The fact that I needed a new fuel pump was confusing me as to what was wrong with my stupid car. The car was hesitating because of bad spark plug wires AND a bad fuel pump........what a mess.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

that's too much of a hassle for me. I'll just go to my local ford dealer where I have a good "hook up" and get some cobra ford motorsport ones.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

Thats SUCKS!!!!

He took mine back on good faith and set me a set, I then replaced them and sent back the bad one's.

That does suck. The new set hasn'e given me a problem in the year and a half they have been on.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

I just changed the wires with the ford racing ones. all problems solved and the car runs GREAT. I can't believe I drove the car that long with that problem. It was always stumbling at low rpm's and I was having to pull over every couple days while driving so I could pop the hood and push the stupid wire back in. These wires are great. a little more expensive but I think they're better than msd's especialy if your having that problem.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

I think it is time for new top get new plugs and wires soon.
Dennis , did you go with the 9mm Ford Motorsports ones? ( they only come in blue , I believe.)
What did they cost ya. I know they were around 100$, not too sure tho.

When I start up my car, at times the engine stumbles and drops in rpm's until it dies out. Could that possibly be because of bad wires or Fuel Pump , LoL Geno. Been having this problem for a while now.
I Think it's time for some new wires and plugs. I have the Fuel Pump on my to do list after the plugs and wires.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

The MSD problem was an old problem where there is still some old stock being sold from large volume buyers.
I personally have installed well over 100 sets of these and NEVER heard of this problem.

The only time I ever heard of it was when it happened to me a while back and Ken & Dennis issue, ever?

Don't scare people away from a good product because 1 out of 100 wires wayyyy back in the day was about 1 16th too long in the rubber boot. Geeeez.

They are kickass wires for the money and have less then 50 ohms per foot of resistiance,

Lets see the OPF stats for the FMS set.

RE: Spark Plug Wire Problem, HELP!

Being that 1 out of 100 person to have the problem really did suck! I spent a total of probably 8-10 hours replacing these wires. I disconnected and reconnected them 5-6 times. Luckily I had replaced my plugs and wires many times before this (with blue cobra wires). If this was my first time replacing the wires, I would have been completely lost.

I will say that even though this problem is rare, MSD tech support knew exactly what I was talking about when I explained the problem......so it couldn't have been that rare. They did say, as Geno mentioned above, that it should be less likely to happen now, and I may have purchased an 'old' set from summit racing. Again, this problem was more common with old sets.

BTW - Johnny Nocera had the same thing happen with his 9MM ford motorsport wires, so who knows?

I just looked for the box to see the "stats" and I must have threw the box out. I went with the ford wires cause I wanted to try a different set than the msd. also as you know Gene I get a good deal at downs. I'm sure another set of msd's would have been fine. I wouldn't steer anyone from the msd's. They were on my car for almost 2yrs and had no problems till the last 2 mos. as far as the wire goes they're not blue they're red and are the ford racing set. I don't know if they are 9mm.
