speakers "popping"

About 2 months ago I had to get a fuel pump replaced in the Mark. I had them put in a high output pump when they did this.

A few weeks afterwards I started to hear some occasional "popping" from the speakers. It wasn't frequent at all and I just ignored it. Fast forward a few more weeks and its starting to become more frequent. Might happen once every 30 min or so. Fast forward again to this past monday and about 5 minutes into my drive it starts popping about once every minute. A few minutes after that it starts a very high pitched screech.

About the same time I got the fuel pump replaced I got a blackberry as well. When this started happening I at first thought interference from the BB with the car's phone. So I turned the car phone off to no avail.

Any thoughts on this? I checked the connection to the power antenna and it seems solid. I've been told to check to see if a speaker has a short to it or if a wire is lose to a speaker (not wanting to pull door panels off). I've also been told it could be a bad ground on the fuel pump.

Any other ideas of easier places to check?

Not likely related to the fuel pump, just a coincidence. Is it just one speaker, all speakers, one side? Does it make the popping with the stereo off?

Sounds to me like you have a failing amplifier.

I've had popping on my 97 Continental, even if the radio off. So I just assumed something was shorting out or the amp was starting to go.

With the radio off, the amplifier should be receiving no power, so popping is indicative of power surges throughout the car and possibly to the amplifier causing every speaker to make the noise.

sounds like every speaker, doesn't sound as though its just one side or front/back.

guess if i need to replace an amp i should upgrade everything :)
