Speaking of Batteries

Just a general question. How long do the original batteries last? Mine seems to be the orginal and I just turned 62,000 on my 98. Is there a new battery in my near future.

RE: Speaking of Batteries

I just replaced my original battery. It was not holding a charge under a load (or something like that). It was really the terminals that caused the problem that caused us to check out the battery, although I figured after 5 years, I wanted a new battery before winter anyway.

OEM batteries have been known to be quite good, but IMHO a '98 is six years old or better, so I'd at least be window shopping - so when the time comes you know which way to go. Be sure to look for at least 850 CCA(Cold Cranking Amps) capacity.

The weak point IMHO is the OEM battery terminals, especially if they have never been removed and cleaned. Consider replacing these anytime when replacing the OEM battery. You don't have to go as extreme as I did:

...any good quality HD replacement will do.

And last but not least... always be sure the new battery is fully charged before putting in service. A slow overnight(8-12 hours) charge is best. This will preserve your alternator.

I like that set up. And everything I've heard, including Sharon and you, is that the terminals are the culprit for many of our electrical woes. I will take your advice and window shop, and since my birthday is coming up maybe I'll get myself a battery and new terminals.
Thanks.

RE: Speaking of Batteries

The only time my setup let me down was when I left the radar detector plugged in... three or four weeks later!

RE: Speaking of Batteries

You can get that EverStart MAXX at Walmart, $54 with trade-in. I just got mine the other day. And they'll take any battery of any type on trade in (got a junk car out back? lol).

Get this, 3 year free replacement! Then a 7 year ProRated replacement after that! 10 year warranty! Can't beat that guys.

And make sure to get the Yellow version. ;)

Thats what I thought too, but mine turned out to have been changed at the dealership, cant tell so well with that cover on there.

RE: Speaking of Batteries

I bought my 95 in 97, so I am pretty sure the battery was not replaced before I bought the car. I keep expecting the battery to die, but it still seems strong.

RE: Speaking of Batteries

It all depends on the environment the car is in.
Out in this Vegas heat, you are doing well tohave a battery last for three years. This heat is wicked on batteries.
Usually if the terminal is bad, so is the first three to four inches of wire. The corrosion travels up the wire slowly but surely.Unfortunately there is not much slack in the factory cable.I usually replace the wires with the terminals.
