Spinning Out of Control!

Just received a 1997 Mark VIII with 185,000 miles and lots of problems. If I cannot resolve them, it just may become a parts car for my other '97 Mark.

First problem is with the rear and/or rear axles. Left rear wheel is spinning when starting from a standing stop or at very low speeds when accelerating. Yellow spinning symbol lights up on dash. There are no other warning signs that illuminate regarding the traction control.

When I press the "Systems check" on the dash, the Traction Control checks OK.
I also have an Air Ride light that comes on, but I believe that is caused by a leak in the system.

This vehicle cannot be driven in anyway without causing the left rear wheel to spin.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong or where to start the diagnosis?

This car sat at a body shop for several years with out being driven, but the former owner states that this problem has existed for thousands of miles before he retired the car at 185,000. No one has been ito the rear or the air ride system. It is all un-touched original.

I'd jack up the rear end, put it in neutral, and spin both wheels by hand. Maybe you have a stuck brake caliper?

If it were me, I'd put it on a lift and pull the rear cover for an inspection of the differential. At that mileage, it's due for it anyways. I would think something of that magnitude would be apparent upon inspection.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. The brake caliper is not stuck or hanging up. I will have to pull the rear cover and what is shows.
