Stall Converter Install........

J

OCCUPY LoD :)
Ok, my tranny is comming out on Monday, I want to know what I'll need to do if I go ahead and get a stall converter. The place I'm getting the converter from said that the lock-up will be harsh because the lock-up clutch will take a beating if the converter is slipping when it engages in normal around town driving.

Will I need to chip the car or have the comp. programmed so the check engine light won't come on?

If so, is that some thing the dealership can do?

Do I need to set up a manual lock-up switch?

What stall should I get for my bone stock 95 Mark VIII?

Thanks a lot!

RE: Stall Converter Install........

I can only tell you my experience.

I'm not sure I understand "the lock-up will be harsh because the lock-up clutch will take a beating if the converter is slipping when it engages in normal around town driving."

Depending upon the stall, yes it will lock/unlock in a surging fashion at low rpms in slow around town driving. Mine does(did) at 3500 stall.

No, you won't get a check engine light but you will want a chip to help with the lockup at low speed/rpms.

No a dealer is not the place, several vendors(including supporting vendors of this site) supply performance chips. You will not need to set up a manual lockup switch, though I suppose that is an option.

Stall setting is hugely a personal preference, but IMHO 3000 to 3200 stall for a stock daily driver would be about the right balance of performance and street manners.

RE: Stall Converter Install........

need an SCT chip. there are a number of places that will do it. I recommend finding a local shop by going to www.superchipscustom.com. a local dealer will be better able to dial the tune in for your specific car and will be more willing to make small tweaks for free when you change other things.

i say 3500 stall. i have a 3200 stall and if i had it to do over again i'd go bigger. also, get a 3 disk lockup clutch if you go through precision industries. with the smaller t/c diameter you need the extra holding force.

you can drive it without a chip. you'll probably want to get a chip anyway though.

RE: Stall Converter Install........

FWIW, I asked two manufacturers and neither advised anywhere close to 3500 stall, but I love it. The triple-disc lockup in the smaller diameter converter just makes common sense but even those have been known to be inadequate in certain combinations.

RE: Stall Converter Install........

Cool, thanks for you help and Driller....as far as the "harsh lock-up" question, he basically said that the lock-up clutch might get burnt if the converter goes into "lock-up" if it hasn't reached the stall rpm yet, for instance if the stall of the converter is 3,500 and you're cruising down the road and it goes into lock-up at 3,200 it is essentially going to "slip" into "lock-up", and when driving around town the converter will tend to heat up and when it goes into "lock-up" it will, over a period of time, burn the "lock-up" clutch. He also said, research and see if you can chip the car to help with this situation.

So basically I'm looking at the price of the converter and I have to add the price of the chip too? Or can I run the converter until I can afford a chip?

RE: Stall Converter Install........

You can run the converter w/o the chip, I do mine. What I learned is if you feel the TC locking and unlocking at low rpms causing an on/off surging of the car - just lightly touch the brake which trips the BOO switch and causes the PCM to unlock the converter which in turn raise the rpms and stops the surging.

What your guy's saying about the lock-up is true across the board for all converters. These cars lockup the TC as low as 1500 rpms! So even the stock unit is not at 'stall speed' when lockup occurs, hence slipping, shudder, yada, yada, yada,...

I've been told the chip can and will help with the situation. As I learn more I'll let you know, but I know BlackIceLSC has successfully had chips control the lock-up converter in a customized fashion with sastifaction.
