Stalling - Will Not Idle

My 97 has been trouble free for the most part. I recently developed a stalling problem. Car starts but will not idle. When I give it some gas it runs fine with no apparent missing and is driveable as long as I can keep the RPMS over 1000. Never any tuneup work done, no chip etc. Car has 74k.
Does this sound like a possible coil plug boot? Read an old post from ggf but his symptoms were sputtering/missing at any rpm when cold.
My problem started when the temps dropped and then went from doing it once in awhile to now it is doing it all the time.
Thanks

Are you getting a check engine light?

You should start with a tuneup and if that doesn't fix it, go from there. Replace the spark plugs and check all the coils and boots. If one plug looks dark (like it hasn't been firing) take a real close look at that coil (or just replace it). Also change the fuel filter.

No check engine light. I was thinking about doing the tuneup anyway so will try that first.

Is there any test for the IAC? I'd look at my service manual CD but its buried somewhere from moving.
thanks

One other thing. You CAN clean your MAF. I clean mine with gumout carb cleaner. Just be sure to let it dry well before you re-install it. My buddy's car had the same problem. The IAC was full of carbon and his MAF had a ghost turd (dust) on the sensor wires. Chances are that your problem lies with one or both components.

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

If you clean the MAF,
do the wire in the center GENTLY with a q-tip and alcohol.

IAC IAC IAC IAC

I just went through this last year. No codes thrown. ran fine other than wouldnt idle. Changed IAC 100% fixed

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

Installed a new IAC. Problem solved. Thanks to all for the suggestions. $90 full list from dealer. Unfortunatley I couldn't wait to order through mail for a discount.

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

before you go spending a lot of money , take a can of carb cleaner with the tube and spray on the vacuum lines , if the engine RPM rises when you do , you have a vacuum leak ..Spray till you locate , and replace $4.00 hose that is dried out and broken.check around you will probably find others in need.

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

seems like my 98 is doing the same thing. was fine last night when i drove home but today it doesnt wanna stay rrunning unless i keep my foot on the gas at about 1000 rpms. It had this happen one other time about a year ago and hasnt happened since. Car has new plugs, plug boots ... within the past few months. Also can you clean the IAC on these like on the mustang or will it mess it up since they dont seperate like on the older ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

The IAC cannot be sucessfully cleaned as far as I know. A new one is about $70. I had mine go bad a year or 2 ago

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

I have a similar problem every once and a while, where my car will idle up and down for like 5 minutes. Is that the IAC as well?

RE: Stalling - Will Not Idle

IAC for as 2nd gen $66.00 at fordparts.com. I am not sure what Max sells them for.
