Stalls on occasion.

I first noticed this problem when i first got the Mark, it's a '98 with 85k on it.

I have a habit of putting the car in neutral when pulling into my driveway, or when coming up to a red light that I know is a long one, it usually runs just fine however sometimes it'll stall out at about 5mph. It also did this once when I was coming up on my exit from the interstate, I was doing about 60 and I put it in neutral just to see how far I could go, got down to about 50 and it stalled. However if I'm already stopped and put it in neutral or park it will idle just fine. Any ideas?
thanks.

Check engine light?

My best guess is Idle air control valve. A breeze to change on a gen 2.

Also what is the point of putting the car in neutral?

Mine will stall sometimes also. It has only happened at lower speeds 5mph (no throttle) while turning left. It seems strange to me, but a freind said it had to do with the car turning against the rotation of the motor. I've never had another vehicle do this so I think he is full of it.

My fix would be stop puting it in neutral.

Well it's really just a habit when I pull in the drive way, but at stop light I think it would 1. help ou the A/C a little cause the rpm's are higher and 2.help with gas a little cause there is no load on the engine, but I'm sure either of these is minuscule, I'm just picky.

But as far as I know it should be able to run in neutral until it runs out of gas, regardless of your speed.
And there are no codes, also I thought a bad IAC would cause the engine to rev up and down a little by itself, or at least it did on my OBD I cars. (This is my first OBDII)

Ok the crank sensor mostly causes no-start issues on the mark.

On my jeep it caused a random shut off also... So really it could be both.

Given the ease of the replacement of the IAC and the relatively low cost of $60 or so. I would start with that and move on the Crank sensor next.

A bigtime shot in the dark, but it could also be a sticking lock-up converter. My Art Carr unit starting doing that...locking up at 5mph, which stalled it. Not sure if stock converters are susceptible.

Wendy's 03 Town and Country van w/ 80k miles had that problem but while in drive - random turning off while driving, or at a stop light. No stutter or stumble - died - just like you turned the key off. Dealer replaced the cam and crank sensor, and the problem went away.

Has the car turned off while in drive, or just when you put it in neutral?

Only whilst in neutral.

Several previous cars of mine (GM 60 V-6 engines with the TH-125) had the habit of the converter locking up when the solenoid that controlled it fails to disengage. You could verify that that is what it was by unplugging the solenoid and just staying in 3rd. But in my case. the Mark doesn't seem to be sticking in fourth, just stalls while moving and while in neutral.

Of course it hasn't done it again since I started this thread.

Thanks for all your help guys.

BTW I do these cars have lock-up for fourth or just overdrive?

"Overdrive" is fourth gear, which can be locked or unlocked depending on what the throttle is doing. On stock Marks, it can lock up in 3rd and 4th.

So there is a physical solid connection in 3rd s well as 4th? (as opposed to a fluid) I thought cars only had that in their highest gear.

What is the ratio in 3rd and 4th? In my previous car it had lockup in 4th with a 1:1 ratio.

Yes...I think. I've got a performance tranny in my car that locks in 4th, 3rd, and (high rpms) 2nd gear. I don't remember for sure if 3rd locks up in stock units.

It does. From the manual...

Torque Converter

The torque converter for the transmission is a four-element converter. It contains the standard three elements (impeller, turbine and stator) for transmission and multiplication of torque, plus a torque converter clutch for increased fuel economy in third and fourth gears.
