Starting in Neutral

VIII looking for 8s
Is a Gen 2 Mark VIII able to be started in neutral? My car stalled the other day (vacuum leak) and I couldn't start it in neutral. I had to put it in park.

Yes, the Gen2 should start in neutral.

It sure can. The MLPS (manual lever position switch) is on the drivers side of the transmission. It is controled by a cable connected to the shift lever. If it gets out of adjustment, it can select 2 gears at once etc, or change things so that the car will only start in reverse etc. There are marks on the outside of the switch that need to be lined up when the car is in neutral (according to my 95 shop manual) (it was the same on my 96). Also, if you feel you need to raplace the unit, NAPA calls them a "neutral safety switch".

Oh, I have replaced that sensor recently. ;) I am in a most likely ill-fated attempt trying to convince myself that the neutralizing condition in 3rd gear before lock-up is attributed to this damn sensor. Have you seen my "Neutralizing" thread? I am just trying to give myself a glimmer of hope again.

I'm not a transmission expert, so I likely am wrong, but doesnt that malfunction sound like a sticking or damaged 2-3 servo?
