heres my problem, i just had to replace my batt and alternator, because i was driving down the road and my car cut off , my batt light was on so i replaced the batt, the batt light was still on after that so i replaced the alternator. Then my im driving along nicely for a while i would say 2 weeks or so after that, and Bam it happened again light goes on I try a jump the car only stays on for a few min and turns off.

Can anyone tell me what the problem could be?

RE: Starting/Running problam?

Hard to tell.

I will tell you this... the battery light is sorta like a voltage gauge. it will come on below a certain voltage. if the engine is running and that light is on, it pretty much means alternator.

If you install a new alternator, and don't FULLY charge the battery, you will kill the alternator. I did this once, i made it about 3 miles down the road before the car stopped in it's tracks... but the battery was pretty dead when i put in the new alternator (barely made it to the auto parts store, installed the alt in the parking lot, tried to drive home, didn't make it). If your battery wasn't quite charged, that could have killed your new alt.

Best bet, take it to autozone. they can check your battery and alternator for free. if the alt is the problem, take it back and tell them you charged the battery overnight before starting the car, if they ask.

RE: Starting/Running problam?

I agree with the alternator vs. battery. A lot of people will unknowingly set into motion a chain of events that require both the alternator and battery to be replaced when only one intially required replacement.

It is best always charge a new battery before installation - overnight is prefferable on an automatic charger.

It is not uncommon for rebuilt alternators from national chain stores to fail prematurely.

Thanks man, yea killed my alternator, just like how you said. Put in a new alternator forgot to recharge the batt (was told to) and it worked for a little while, and then it died.

Im replacing the alternator for free (its under warranty) and im charging the batt as we speak.

But thanks for the help

DAMNIT, ok so now i have replased the alternator twice and its doing the same thing, but its running a little longer. Any ideas? Some have told me that theres somethings draning my batt or there might be a short.

this really sucks, this car is my babby and almost all my money goes in to it :(

It is possible the cooling fan motor is drawing too much current. Might want that checked with a good ampmeter. Turn the AC on MAX and the cooling fan should be on maximum. Mine was about 20 amps, but 30 or more would be a concern.

Have the battery checked for a dead cell.

Check for parasitic drains on battery when off. If you find a current draw, pull fuses one by one using process of elimination to find circuit drawing current from battery.

RE: Starting/Running problam?

Yeah i got an idea for you i had the same problem with my 89 lsc that it started up then it just died and i couldnt figure out why the alternator was good and so was the sylonid and i couldnt figure out just why it wasnt working and i found out from a friend online that the battery has to at least have 750 cold cranking amps in it i put a 1,000 in mine and it starts up every time now so you could try that if not that check the sylonoid hope that helps you out dude nguskater17@cabanova.com
