Steering column "brain"

A few months ago I had to part with my 98 Mark8 due to several repair high cost issues. One of them was a "potentiometer" which is the brain for the steering column. In place of my Mark I purchased a 2005 V8 LS. The LS steering column operates in a similar fashion as my Mark8 did. My concern is that "potentiometers" for the Mark8 were no longer in stock anywhere except for a junk yard if you were lucky. My question is - is the LS steering column operated by a similar brain and will it not be available 10 years from now? sounds like something out of the Terminator series but I am just wondering about future availability! Any ideas out there in Lincoln Land?
