Steering wheel/column removal?

Jamie, I did pretty much exactly what you said. To be honest, like you said it was not that bad. But, the junk yard column won't extend out..... it will move up/down and even back but not out. I paid $50 for everything willing to risk it not working....... can't I extend it manually by rotating the the shaft at the back of the column?

If it was shut off with the column OUT, and you didn't rotate the potentiometer to full IN before you installed, the electronics THINKS it is already out..... and of course it can not go in because of physical limits. Ask me how I know........NOT!

Oh yeah, the column I just put in didn't have the over travel recall done to it. Will the dealer still honor this recall and fix it? Or am I wasting my time?

Best way is to just stop by and ask at the service desk......But I kinda doubt it. If they say 'NO", ask if the kits are still available and YOU can do it! While you have it back out to do it, you can turn the pot back then.

OK, I'll check to see if they are still available. Can you elabrate on how to reset the pot? The wheels is now as far back as it will go..........

Have you used the search function to find the procedure? It's in here somewhere...I gotta leave right now....

on the back of the column are two motors, they look like window motors but smaller, if you take the harness and unplug it from each motor, you can use 12 volts and just jump the motors to move the column where you want it, then leave them unplugged. the potentiometer can be cleaned, it wont move out because the contacts inside it are dirty. but you dont even want to begin to know whats involved! you have to completely dissassemble the column, i have done it multiple times, it isnt very fun, but if you want it to work correctly...........................

Yeah, I started tearing into the one I just installed and realized I shouldn't borrow trouble so I left it alone. I've seen a few post on spraying contact cleaner into the pot to get it going again, is this advisable? I've got a power supply for 12V and I know the right side motor is the one that extends the wheel, so how do I know what polarity will drive the wheel out?

This is never ending............ now the lights behind the cruise on/off don't work as well as the headlight switch surround bulb. The other side of the cruise functions lighting works as well as everything else. I checked fuses and they look good..... any ideas? They worked right after I put thungs back together Monday. Not sure why their now giving trouble now.

didnt you say you switched the column and wheel all together? if so the cruise switch board behind the on/off cover may have a burned out bulb, its common. the polarity doesnt matter on the extend motor, if you hook it up wrong, all it will do is try to come in more, but if its all the way in already, switch your wires till it goes out. you wont hurt anything.

OK, I actually put my old wheel and airbag on the junkyard column, not sure why it decided to blow now? Is the bulb easy to replace? I know the one behind the headlight switch is easy to get to, I'll get after it this weekend. Thanks for your help!

Well, my old power supply won't move the motor. I guess it just would produce enough juice. So, I plulled the motor off the rear of the column and moved the wheel out with a ratchet. When I got it where I wanted it I put it all back together but left that motor disconnected. Now the wheel moves up/down but not out/in. Slowly but surely getting eveything working on this beast! Thanks for all your help guys.
