tackling the tran cooler install....

this weekend. Going out to a friend's in the desert with a big garage armed only with my B & M cooler, bulkparts fitting and Maples8 installation instructions. Can anyone who has performed this install offer additional advice that Maples8 may have overlooked? I plan to run the cooler inline with existing OEM cooler. One question here; where EXACTLY does the barbed fitting go and why is it important at only ONE location? Why don't the hoses also tend to slide off the smooth fittings on the cooler?

Follow the instructions on mounting the cooler as advised. Print the instructions so you have them handy during the install. Use the brackets supplied with the cooler and be sure to leave all the bolts loose until you have the brackets shaped to hold the cooler in proper position. Make sure the cooler body is not rubbing any part of the car then tighten all the mounting hardware. Obviously with the cooler mounted on the passenger side - have the cooler fittings pointed towards the drivers side.

Disconnect and remove the battery to allow better access to the upper tranny cooler line going to the radiator. Carefully loosen and remove the fitting connecting the cooler line to the radiator. Examine the fitting and flare of the tubing. It will look very much like the male hose barb fitting from bulkpart. Take the male hose barb fitting and tighten into the radiator where you just removed the cooler line. Now take the female fitting and attach to the line fitting on the cooler line. Use two wrenches and tighten. You will need to carefully bend/twist the tubing to allow the hose to connect. Do not kink the tubing!

Route the hoses(follow the cooler instructions) and attach between the new cooler fittings and the hose barb fittings you just attached. One clamp on each will suffice. Do not overtighten the hose clamps or they will strip out. On the cooler connections you will note that the end is slightly bigger than the tube. Once clamped tight it cannot slip over the end of the tube connection. It will be a very tight fit for the hose on the new hose barb fittings. Be sure to push the hose on all the way and do not twist a kink in the hose.

Be sure to loop enough hose at the radiator fitting to prevent bending the hose and causing a restriction. Secure the hoses with nylon ties.

I needed additional hose(more than what was in the kit) to route them properly. If you don't have any, you better get some, and make sure it is properly rated.

I hope this helps.

RE: tackling the tran cooler install....

Yo Driller,
I was privately praying you'd be the guy to reply to that. I've got a much clearer picture now, thanks. I'm a little surprised tho. This BM cooler gets spliced into the system BEFORE the oil gets routed thru the OEM. I would have thought the BM cooled the oil coming OUT of the OEM. This means that if a guys engine is running hot, the BM might be putting cooler oil INTO the OEM than what is coming OUT of it, right? That's why Maple8 bypassed the OEM altogether, I guess. I'm not worried. Mine runs so cool that the temp needle barely lifts itself into the operating zone. I noticed B & M has some pretty neat stuff over there....like a transmission oil temp gauge. Now THAT has to be worth its weight in gold. Thanks again Driller!!
