before i left for georgia with my 93, i knew it needed a tie rod, i didnt want to chance it so i changed it, but before i did, i had a metam on metal clunk sound over bumps, i thought it was the tie rod making the noise, but after i changed it, it was still there, so oh well i drove 900+ miles with the noise. fast forward to this week the sound was getting much worse, bad sounding, today i had to stop what i was doing and pull the car in the shop and see what the problem was. i went over the whole front end, hitting things, looking real close at everything, can see anything. i'm thinking at this point, maybe the struts are junk, or at least one of them. so i took the bolt out of the spindle where the upper ball joint is on the driverside first, after i knocked the upper control arm out of the spindle, i grabbed it and wiggled back and forth, OMG!!!!!!!!! the bushing closer to the firewall is smoked, i could wiggle the upper control arm back and forth about 3/4 of an inch. i have seen these bushing go bad many times, but my front end isnt old, i am gonna take a short video tomorrow of the slop in it for others to see, incase down the road this happens to someone else this may be your problem too. i put new uppers in it tonight and drove home in peace and quiet. i cant argue with the way old greenie rides even though i never cared for the car much, but it has been a good car!

Gotta love the mystery clunk....I am chasing one too. Replaced the rack this past weekend, got rid of some of it. There was a ridiculous amount of play in it. How old were your upper control arms? Mine are about 2.5 years old, they are TRW. Lowers are about 1.5 years old, TRW also.

mine were just over a year but im thinking the new speed bumps they put in my neighborhood might have something to do with it. i dont know how hard my wife hits them,, but of course, they are the mini mountain sized ones that you almost have to get towed over. i dont know why they added these we already have tons of them in here.
