Had a t-stat fail a while back guage never let me know
Got to toll booth and motor sounded horrible but while cruising i never heard it
Anyway Mobil 1 saved the motor
THis happened 2 months ago
Now every now and then i get a tap tap tap that comes and goes at idle
Sometimes worse when idling in gear under a little load etc.
Any ideas as to what i might have hurt? Follower maybe?

If its something i can yank the Valve Covers and replace or check out let me know. Just trying to figure out if my motor is on borrowed time...

130k miles

RE: Tap tap tap at idle ever since overheated 1 time.

Tap Tap tap sounds like valve lifers. Could be something worse (like piston/rod knock). They sound much different and should be easy to tell apart. Is your oil pressure still okay? Was Mobil 1 in the car when it overheated? If it "sounded horrible" could be cooked. Mobil 1 doesn't cook as well as dino oil. Cooked dino oil will turn to this flakey ash condense on any interior motor surface and totally plug up an engine. I bought a car with a tapping motor and stuck ON oil light once, and when I took the intake off, you wouldn't believe the black crud underneath it. I had the engine rebuilt, but they wouldn't tank the block until I cleaned it up first!

If it's a lifter, might be it's plugged up a bit. You might get lucky and it will go away on it's own. Worst case you'll have to take it out, clean/replace it.

If it's piston/rod knock, it's gonna die sooner or later.

If it were me, I would try to isolate which side made the noise and pull that cam cover for inspection. Good Luck.

Yeah she had Mobil always since 5k miles.

Sounds worse coming from the bottom of the car... say like when up against a drive thru in gear with the A/C on.

Take out of gear and it gets quieter without a load.

Really scary as that kinda leads to bottom end???

Do you have to pull the cams on this bastage to get the lifters out?

Maybe its time for a good motor flush?? and refill.

Just scary i never use that type of stuff.

been over 5000 miles since it happened and i take 2 500 mile road trips every 2 wks with 4.10 i am at 3000-3150 on the highway most of the trip and nothing has gotten worse..

The funny part is that it comes and goes... rod knock or piston slap usually comes and stays..

Any more thoughts?

Thanks..

Ok today noise is gone again but last night was really noticable at lights etc.

If someone knows please tell me if i should be worried...

Kinda freaked because i cannot buy another car or engine right now.

But would like to know if i should be planning for disaster.

Thanks anyone.

BTW i did change from 5w30 to 10w30 right before the overheat and i put 10w30 back in could that be too thick?
