temp. gauge problem??

I have a problem that I hope is just a bad ground, the temp gauge on my mark has been going up and down. The gauge will rise all the way to just before leaving the normal part of the gauge and then come down to a more normal temp. The display on the dash says the temp is normal and the car doesnt seem to be running hot, is there a place that I can tap in a aftermarket gauge to check this one or is just a normal problem with these cars.... Thanx Mark

Or air trapped in the cooling system.

RE: temp. gauge problem??

I still have to check for proper fan operation, and will check for air traped in system, but I was thinking that the gauge may be the problem since the other day I started the car and the gauge was all the way hot and came down after a little bit. Thanks for the fast responces with no smart a$$ replys like alot of other boards tend to have. thanx again... Mark

Just to eliminate it as a possibility, you might want to spend $10 on a new temperature switch. It is really a sensor, but it was named a switch. This "switch" is what generates the signal to the analog gauge on the dash. It is located in the upper-front-driver part of the engine. Just below and right of the alternator (looking at the engine from the front).

RE: temp. gauge problem??

Not to sound like a broker record, but the symptons you describe sound like a sticking thermostat or air in the system. If it were my vehicle I would go get myself a new stat and some coolant. Change the stat and refill the system properly and see if this does not fix the problem.. If not then you can start looking at the possibility of faulty sensors and/or bad guages.

Replacing the temp switch will take a quarter of the time and only costs $10. I did this on my 93 and it worked.
