Temp Guage

Just bought an 88 town car and the temp guage doesn't seem to work. Any help on getting this thing working would be great.

Thanks

Chris

RE: Temp Guage

is the gauge just staying all the way cold?

it could be the car just not warming up. is there a thermostat in it?

RE: Temp Guage

Yea the guage is staying all the way @ cold. As far as I know the car is warming up. The heat gets hot and you can feel the top radiator hose get warm when the thermostat opens.

RE: Temp Guage

There's a temperature sender for the gauge on the intake manifold right at the front (look behind and slightly to the side of the distributor). It has a single small stud on it and a single red/white wire with a 90 deg. plug going to it. The sensor body is brass in colour. These sensors fail all the time!

A simple test: disconnect the wire and jump it to a good ground with the ignition on. The gauge should rise right to the top of the hot zone. If it does, replace the sensor.

It simply unscrews out of the manifold.

When installing it, put a bit of pipe sealant on the threads and tighten it down a little more than snug. You don't want it to leak, but if you REALLY torque it down hard, you'll damage the sensing tip.

RE: Temp Guage

I talked to my parts guys today. '88 Town Cars had two possible senders:

For the electronic display clusters: part # SW2328
For regular analog gauges: part # SW1344A

Both senders are ~$12.00. No big deal.

There's still a possibility you may have an open circuit in the wire between the sender and the gauge, and a very small chance it's the temperature guage itself (that's pretty rare on Town Cars).

90% of the time it's the sender. That's the first place I'd look.
