The Movie: The Passion of Christ

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Thanks for posting that Paul. I'm wrong. I stand corrected. Guess I'm down to whether its gets any nominations or not.

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Listen to me, Please ~ and I say that with all due respect to you, Brian.
IF you are thinking of the "Jewish angle" - you are wrong, and I will tell you why. There's a radio show in NYC with 2 Rabbis. They take phone-in calls, this has been a top topic this week, as you can imagine. Both Rabbis saw the movie, and allthough they had to grit their teeth through the gory scenes, they said in fact that it was not anti Jewish, and like Sandy had pointed out, at the time of Christ's death, there were NO Christians - so it had to be the Hebrews and/or The Romans.

Now, if you are speaking of it from a theatrical stand-point, that being quality, of course it will win. Look at the costume design, the (preported) acting, the thE tHE TALE IT TELLS, the meaning to billions of people, the effect on history, the creation of Christianity, followers of Christ, the very essence of it all. It's a mega block buster, like the movie OR NOT ~ it is just that.

IT HAS TO WIN or Hollywood will really be castrated.

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Sandy, I have always listened to you.

My opinion was based on the outcry from the Jewish community as well as the media elite who find this film potentially dangerous to their political strategies. If this movie effectively moves more people to the right, they lose. This is a 50/50 nation with much of the country's future to be determined in a few short years, based on who wins the culture war.

I just can't see them letting it be recognized, much less let it win. The only way they will allow it to be recognized is if they feel threatened in their pocketbooks. That is the only way. I mentioned after the first day or two that because people weren't falling for the anti-semetic stuff so they had to change gears. Now it is just decried as too violent to be considered good theater. Just like in Massachusetts were the majority in the polls (60%) are against gay marriage, people are becoming fed up with their beliefs being attacked left and right. I'm all for gay unions and those rights they are clamoring for. Hey go at it. Just leave marriage between a man and a woman alone.

Believe me, I am extremely happy for Mel. He had the intestinal fortitude to see this thru. Bravo for Mr. Gibson.

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Well, saw the movie today. How can I put it? Two things come to mind:

Firstly, Jesus Christ had it coming to him. Being God, he is responsible for what he created - this (edit) "messed" up world - and as soon as we got the chance we nailed him to a tree. I would have done the same to him if I lived back then.

Secondly, Jesus Christ had it easy. One day of horrible suffering, then he gets to spend the rest of eternity at the right hand of God in heaven. Not sure about you, but I would be crucified for that opportunity.

These opinions are coming from a true agnostic, so take them with a grain of salt. I am not sure why anyone (who saw the movie) thinks that it is "anti-Semitic". I guess it is just another opportunity to play the race card.

Anyone else see this film...?

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Finally a review from some on who seen it, and not just from what they have heard from the media.

Brian, there is a street. This street has on it 20 homes, 10 per side, we'll say. Two people on the street are outside yelling. Is "everyone" outside yelling? NO! But Everyone, (Brian) hears & sees are the ones yelling, NOT the ones inside & quiet. See...
So, of course you've heard from the ones yelling...there are alot more, not yelling.
IF IF IF IF IF that movie is "ant-semitic" (and for 15 seconds lets assume that it is....to make my point) THEN THAT should be the biggest anti-semitic thing going on in this nation! Rabbis have stated that it is NOT, what more do you want?

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Your argument would hold water if you were comparing ordinary citizens. When the members of the Jewish community, many (not all) in positions of power in that community, create the outcry, that is where the opinion comes from. I did not say they speak for the whole community. Please note: I have never said the movie was anti-semetic. Exactly the opposite. Like you have stated very well. How can it be, there were only Jews and Romans back then.

My point was before the movie even came out, people were playing the religious card. That's my point. Everybody wanted to pounce on this thing to discredit it. In this case the absolute overwhelming popularity of this movie has silenced much of the discord. Hard to be heard shouting from the rooftops when you're flat on your back being run over by the masses. So I think we're on the same page actually.

JD, nice review. Wish I could be around for your day of reckoning. LOL.

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Brian, is's really simple. It **IS** a MOVIE, and as I said prior you bring your own baggage into the movie. Person "A" dislikes people of the Jewish faith, he is gonna view the movie from THAT posistion. Person "B" is neutral, no + or - feelings, that person is going to see the movie from a neutral aspect, mostly historical in venue. Person "C" likes, is married to, or is Jewish - that person is going to see it from that aspect, and as I see it, even WE don't agree on the movie. Whatever ~
Problem is, we are a combative bunch (humans) and if you like Fords, feeling is, you must hate Chevies. If you live here, and like the Yankees, you gotta dislike the Mets. If you're a democrat you are supposed to hate the republicans. It is that mentality that brings about Anti Semitism - not a movie. If you see a movie about killing, do you change from a religious honest man to a murderer? Of course not, you were what you were, had the conceptions you had when you entered the theatre. I do not have any ill will towards anyone, other religions, races, or sexual preferences. Live & let live, just don't, AND I MEAN DON'T EVER EVER SCRATCH ONE OF MY CARS, that is cause for bloodshed!! (Now I am leaving your company for a while to go see what's happinging over at Caddy-land :)

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Enjoy your trip. Man, I would hate to be the poor soul who ever runs into one of your cars. Of course, they'd have to be a complete idiot to drive off the road and crash into your garage.

RE: The Movie: The Passion of Christ

Man what an incredible movie!!! I almost passed out, the girl next to me was crying, my friend was all teary eyed, the lady next to him was crying, and man all the sniffles and sobbing that was heard throughout the thearter. Truly awesome and spectacular. Not a movie but an experience. I was all teared up at one point and came close to passing out after witnesing the scourging. Any movie that can have that effect on people is incredible-it better win best movie at the oscar's next year! I could'nt believe that this movie had this kind of effect on me and the graphic reality that it presented was uncanny! I am an amatuer boxer and have seen lots of gruesome and insane stuff but never nothing like that or anything that has given me this kind of feeling. I recommend everyone experience this movie and forget the gruesomeness and take in the presentation!
