Thinking of getting a MAC

Well, just like the title says I am thinking of buying a cheap mac on ebay, possibly a laptop, but probably just a desktop. I am looking for suggestions from those here that have one. I have never owned one, and want to buy one just to play with, and learn something new, but needs to be functional. I don't play games or do anything too CPU intensive. Mostly I do web, email, mp3 downloading, and some DVD editing. I was thinking maybe a G3 or G4 would be plenty?? I have a 15K RPM drive sitting here that I would like to be able to throw in it, unless I get a laptop. I welcome any suggestions into my new venture!!

RE: Thinking of getting a MAC

Get a G4 iMac. That's the one with the stainless steel arm holding the screen. That's the one I use presently and you'll love it for everyday use. If you can, find one with an Airport wireless card built in then if you have a wireless network, you can pick it up by the stainless steel arm and move it from room to room. I take mine outside to my patio or my porch when the weather is nice.

These are also great for just leaving them somewhere where visitors can see it and let iPhoto display a slideshow of selected photos run while listening to MP3's using iTunes. You'll soon find everyone crowding around looking at the photo albums.

And, as I'm surfing the net and typing this, I'm multitasking. I know that's no big deal, but I'm multitasking using Windows XP Pro on Virtual PC building map sets for my Garmin GPS and using Mac OS Classic for a recipe application I keep for my wife's recipes. That's 3 OS's all at the same time, all this without EVER worrying about virus's.

These do hold their resale good unfortunately if you're looking to pick one up cheap.

I agree, get a G4 iMac. We use them extensively at work to put together 1,000-page catalogs in 4 color and grayscale. I use a G5 but I'm doing a lot of intese work with mine, besides graphics and desktop publishing. Personally, I like them better than PCs which I have at home.

RE: Thinking of getting a MAC

I was kina trying to stray away from an Imac, and get a tower unit... Either way would 500-600 MHZ be enough for my needs, or what do I need, as I understand a lower MHZ mac is equivalant to a higher x86.

You do realize that if Billy was to get really drunk one night after an XP party, and stops support/making office for Mac, that Macs would go down the drain no?

In agreement...also it's not just the software that drives the love of the MAC but hardware, a Dual G5 would SMOKE a lot of Intel servers out there, and it's a DESKTOP!!! I'd love to get one but just can't give up my WIN-INTEL WORLD.

Oh almost forgot graphics, hands down the best on ANY systems!!!!

Sorry guys, but its true. Thats why apple rushed to sign a contract with Bill, to keep Office going.

if it werent for anti-trust laws, Macs would have been a thing of the past.

There are other such products on the market and AppleWorks is a great example, that is all I use and I see no need for Office. In fact, I don't use a single MS product and I'm better off for it. The only MS product I have is IE and I only use it to test web pages to see how they perform, I much prefer Safari which is far superior.

There is another program VERY close to office for PC as well, AND its FREE to download, but it hasnt gained grounds for a reason.

Office is much more then you think.
