Timing chain serivce. How much?

I think my timing chain has slipped or broken etc. (or the tensioner is broke) the car wont start I've got good fuel, because I can smell it in the exhaust COP's are firing and the starter is working. It turns but wont catch. So I'm about to have it towed over the Lincoln dealer. Their saying $1600 and 3 days. The car just turn 74k and no other shops around st. louis will touch it. Any ideas on if ford is in the ballpark with this price? or any ideas of what might be wrong?

Which timing chain, you have 4 of them? There is a lot of skilled labor involved in changing them. Also the 4.6 is an interference engine, so if a timing chain did go you could have other damage. I doubt that is the problem. Probably something electric or a sensor like that cam positioning one.

Check compression or pull the valve covers off and see if anything is moving.

You can let the dealer find the problem. Might cost you 60 or 70 bucks for the check.

thats what i'm doing now. I'm waiting on the tow truck to send it over to the dealer. could it be the cam positioning sensor problem?!?

Usually the CID sensor(aka cam position sensor), is an intermittent problem. So if the dealer gets it and it starts and runs... that's what I would suspect. Don't neglect to check the harness at the sensor as well. The wire(s) break internally next to the harness connector causing an intermittent open circuit leaving the injector timing a chance event.

Smelling fuel in the exhaust is not not necessarily a positive indication of proper fuel, but I guess if you can smell it it supports the cam position sensor theory. Test for fuel pressure with a gauge at the fuel rail schrader fitting. When you turn the key on, the pump will run for a second or two building 32 psi at the rail.

I have heard of one persistent no-start condition that was traced to clogged cats.

I just got a call from the dealer He says it flooded! I've never heard of a newer fuel injected car flooding. to me I think something may have caused the flooding. Dont know. tune-up and oil change (lots of gas in the oil.) I'm going to pick up the car in about 1 hour. but i'm going to check some things when I get home.

Are you sure you had spark?

It is rare to 'flood' a EFI motor, but it's been known to happen. I think the standard procedure when flooded is to crank it with the throttle pedal to the floor.

Think about the cam/crank sensors. The cam sensor is responsible for the fuel injector timing. The crank sensor is responsible for the trigger to time the ignition system and fire the plugs. Interestingly enough, an engine with a faulty CID signal will continue to run, but will not start. A fault in the crank sensor will not allow the engine to start or continue to run.

An intermittent no-start is very indicative of a problem with the cam sensor. Usually when the crank sensor goes bad, it's finite.

Both the guy at car-x and I the cranked on it for a few seconds with the petal to the floor. nothing?!?!? Maybe I needed to do it longer

How hard is it to change the cam/crank senor (to lazy to look it up in my shop manuals.)

RE: Timing chain serivce. How much?

The cam sensor is located on the front upper drivers side of the engine behind the power steering reservoir and is retained by one bolt. Just unbolt the reservoir and coax out of the way leaving the hoses attached for adequate room to R&R the sensor.

The crank sensor is located on the lower passenger side of the engine towards the front, behind the air conditioner compressor. Unbolt the compressor and leaving the lines attached, coax it aside making room to R&R the crank sensor.

RE: Timing chain serivce. How much?

Happen to have a cost on both of those? do they commonly go out? I should be able to get the part number out of the shop manuals.

RE: Timing chain serivce. How much?

think the crank sensor was 36.00 from the Stealership.

Cam sensor was like 17.00 at Oreilly's.

We changed the CAM sensor in the parking lot at oreilly's in about 20 minutes.
Actually TIFFANY changed the Cam Sensor.

Also, I had an intermittant crank sensor problem, I chased it around for quite awhile before I just "changed the danged thing".

One day it would be fine, then.. it'd be bad.
it was definatley intermittant though.
