To buy or not to buy?

Hello everyone,
I am debating as to the future purchase of a 1988 Lincoln Mark VII Bill Blass Edition. The only problem I have is it has rust in quite a few areas, the part the worries me most is the inside of the doors. The rust there is pretty bad and is almost all the way through in some spots. Any idea how hard this would be to get fixed, or would it be easier to order used doors and attach them.

The interior is is almost mint condition and the guy is asking $550 for it. Does anyone know any sites or locations that have a wide variety of parts for an 88? And has anyone ever had trouble finding parts for them?

Thanks a lot,
Chris

RE: To buy or not to buy?

For $500, you can't really go wrong (if it runs / drives). Is it just the doors, or the rockers too? You can toss a pair of doors or fenders on, fixing rockers or quarter panels is a little harder to do.

Welcome!

It runs, drives, and all power options work (except the antenna). The rockers are almost gone (from rust). There is quite a bit of rust on the trunk and around the doors, and also there was quite a few of small bubbles.

RE: To buy or not to buy?

Welcome.

The first three questions to ask a seller:
Does the car start properly?
Does the car run properly?
Does the car stop properly?
It appears that you've found these three things to your satisfaction and are now asking about the cosmetics. Body shops have set prices for insurance based repairs on cars, so a fender bender in Detroit should cost the same as a fender bender in Pensicola. When in doubt ask a shop for an estimate of the work before buying the vehicle. Generally though, the spots that you mentioned on this Mark VII are normal for one that has lived in the Salt Belt of our country and are normally minor to repair.

Price.

Should you buy it?

That 1988 Lincoln mark VII retailed for $32,000.00 at a time that a pack of cigarettes and a gallon of gasoline were about a dollar each. Today, if it starts and runs and stops properly, Mark VIIs are worth anywhere from $300.00 to $18,000.00 with an average of about $1,200.00 If I didn't aslready have a 1988, I would buy it.
