Traction-Lok or no?

How can I tell if my '98 MK VIII has the "Traction-Lok" diff?

I am looking to replace the fluid back there and need to know if I need the additive.

I imagine this is similar to "posi" but I haven't been in enough sticky (or not sticky) situations with this car to tell. Yet...

Don't worry, unless someone installed a traction-lok, it is an open differential.

I thought it was an open differential too but the guys at penzoil told me it was reading on their computer that it's a limited slip... I still don't know if I believe them or not but it feels fine with the fluid they put in.:confused::confused:

Simple enough to test.

Have a guy on each side of the street while you floor it...if both wheels spin, you got trac-lok.

Jack the rear wheels off the ground, put it in neutral, and turn the drive shaft. If both rear wheels turn the same direction it's a trac loc.

Don't listen to oil change monkeys. Don't even talk to them.:D

I have spun both wheels lots of times, left rubber, in my Mark and it is the factory rear.

Simple enough to test.

How bout if one wheel is in the dirt and the other on pavement, the one in the dirt shouldn't spin if it is Traction-Lok right?

ALL mark VIIIs have open diffs unless it was changed in the aftermarket.

Well, just for the sake of possibility, there is a guy right here on this very site that has a Mark VIII with a track-lock from the factory, and 3.55 gears to boot.

Didn't think that was possible...oh well.

I see open-diff cars spinning both wheels at the drag strip all the time. As long as both sides are getting very close to the same resistance, both will spin. And I have video of mine spinning both, back when I had an open diff.

There is also a mark VIII that was supercharged....

everything is possible, but honestly the chances of that are 1 in 100,000 or so ;)

You can do a 'double burnout' with a car that has an open diff and get both wheels to 'bite' at the launch.
