Tranny Cooler

I friend of mine has a friend whom works for a ford place, and gave him a bunch of tranny coolers (almost perfect) from super duty trucks, some big some bigger!!! Anyhoo he gave me one of the smaller ones still pretty big (14"x 22") and when we where looking in the front end of my mark there was a very small cooler I'd never seen before installed in front of the radiator, it has a ford part# on the install mount, What is it? A very small tranny cooler? Could the 1st owner have had ford put that tiny thing in as a tranny cooler, it has lines hooked up to it, it's about 8"x 6" 0r 5"? Just wondering.

RE: Tranny Cooler

It's in front or the rad. and seems to be mounted more toward the top. It could be the power steering cooler I just to lazy to trace the lines.... ::roll::

Is sounds like the air conditioning condensor to me.John[link:www.goldengatemark8.com|Golden Gate Mark VIII Website]http://mark8.org/users/johnaec/Mark_VIII_s.jpg'97 Mark VIII LSC (Sold to SCcouper)'96 T-Bird 4.6L

The AC condenser is much larger then what he described; it is the power steering cooler.

RE: Tranny Cooler

How big and where would those be located? I mean it's not that big a deal, it's just where to mount the new tranny cooler? It's not as small as I'd like but it was free.:D

RE: Tranny Cooler

The cooler from Lincoln comes with a bracket to mount it from the top. Did you get one with the coolers you got?

RE: Tranny Cooler

No I got a tranny cooler w/ 1000 miles on it from a ford super duty truck from a friend, while looking at the car to see where to put it I saw there was already a very small cooler mounted on the car w/ lines, etc. It had what I assume to be a ford part# on the mounting arm. I know (at least I think) they didn't come standard w/ tranny coolers. So it must be something else, unless the 1st owner had it installed later, but like I said it's kind of small to be a "good" tranny.

The cooler I got will have to be "fitted" erm snuggly, w/ a weld here and a cut there....

RE: Tranny Cooler

Make certain you flush that used cooler with a professional kit! See www.bulkpart.com

The Ford truck tranny coolers are a pretty good size and actually a pretty good price. You will need to most likely hang it from fabricated brackets in front of the AC condensor. Should do well.

RE: Tranny Cooler

I think he's got another, want one....it's about 2 foot by 3 foot

You could mount it on the roof!!!

RE: Tranny Cooler

Having a cooler that is to big is not good because the fluid wont get up to the optimal temperature range.

The answer to that is a thermal bypass valve.

RE: Tranny Cooler

I believe you are definetly looking at the power sterring fluid cooler. Just be careful about mounting your for Free Cooler as if its contaminated or blocking your air flow to the radiator tooo extensive it aint worth it.

But that does not help the blocked air flow to the condenser and radiator if the cooler is too big as well.

I plan to try and mount a big cooler across the bottom openings of the bumper cover. I may install blocks to space it off the bumper cover. I think there may be room. We'll see.

I forget the FLM truck tranny cooler measurements, but it is very similarly sized and can be had from a dealer for about $75.

RE: Tranny Cooler

I will have to take a pic of the one i got from Lincoln, the install is nice with the brackets they have in the kit. I don't have a trans temp gauge hooked up so i can't say if bigger would be better or it keeps the temp in the sweet spot. I also use amsoil full synthetic that can run at a higher temp.
