Tranny install labor

What does the MAC chart say on how long it takes to remove and install the tranny on a '93 Mark VIII?

I had a guy tell me 15 hours. That's not rebuilding it, just replacing it.

Granted, it's probably more complicated but a guy in Holland dropped my '84 Cutlass's tranny, rebuilt it and had it back in and I was on my way back to Belgium by lunch time. He started at 8 am. That's FOUR hours.

I can't say from experience, but a buddy of mine had a converter put in his by a 4r70w expert here in town and i think he said it took 6 hours and that includes the guy looking over and checking the tranny. I couldn't possibly imagine it taking 15 hours. I would assume that it would be like swapping a tranny in a mustang or anything else. I'd say 5 hours tops, working at a fairly slow pace. :D

I think its 5.2hrs I cant remember exactly

I would think a competent tech with a lift and air tools could have it swapped out in 4-5 hours. I've had mine taken out for a converter swap and had it back running in about that amount of time.

That's what I thought. I guess the guy just doesn't want to do it. Oh well, someone else will get paid then.

I'm not gonna try it in my garage on my back. I MIGHT if I had access to a lift and the right tools, but I don't.

I'm sure I'll find someone to do it.

One thing I might try is rebuilding my old one. I'll be able to take my time to make sure I do it right. If I could do that I'll be able to say I really accomplished something.

i did mine in my 97 on my back, well not really my back, i was sitting most of the time, i had my 97 on 5 ton 36 inch jack stands, that made it awesome!!

.

That is exactly what the deal is.. the guy rather than "tell you no".. would rather "price you right out of the job"..and have "you say no".

8 hours labor for someone that has never done it before is "just about right".
A competent person, with basic skills and tools could pull this job off over a weekend.

MYSELF, based on the many times we've done this type of thing {trust me here)
We pull the motor and trans out the bottom, dropping the Kmember, which makes it about 1000 times easier to "do the job".

We did it as described above in 8 hours, from pulling the car into the garage, to pulling it back out with the new trans.

Then, we tried the next time to "just pull the trans".
wound up breaking one of the top trans to block bolts and it took us 8 hours on two seperate days to pull "ONLY" the trans.

If you try to pull ONLY the trans, it's going to be very hard. trust me.. "been there, done that".

hope this helps, but I KNOW you dont want to hear "pull the motor and trans" together, but it DOES make it ALOT easier.

Time wise I can't help you.

I had a front pump seal leaking more than I could tolerate. [I hate leaks] :(

I took the car to a trans shop where I have known the folks for better than 10years.

The trans was pulled, front pump seal and bushing replaced, other seals replaced while it was out and filter and fluid change. $425

Dropped it off and picked it up 24hrs latter.

Considering the cost of the Mercron 5 (60+ dollars) and 20ish for the filter...
I'd say you got a SCREAMING DEAL on R&R on a mark 8 transmission!

He obviously looked it up wrong(15 hours is a lot EVEN to rebuild it) or he thought you looked like he could take you to the bank.

+1.

My guy charges $250 for swapping. Not sure how many hours he charges, but at that price it must be low.

That's about $50/hr. Most reasonable. I'll find someone here to do it.

Thanks for all the comments. I knew that guy was full of s&*t!
