Tranny Issue????

Hello everyone. I have a problem with my 94 when I start to accelerate from a stop. Once the car is warm, the car will start to shudder when I accelerate. The shuddering will stop when I hit about 20-30 mph. The car does not act this way at all when cold either. I was thinking it might be the torque converter, but I just got the car, and I dont know if there any other problems like this with other cars. Thanks for the help.

RE: Tranny Issue????

The shudder could be due to bad fluid in your case. The change in performance with temperature is an indicator.

Do the cheap option first, which is to drain and refill with new fluid.

If you still have the problem, let us know.

RE: Tranny Issue????

It's actually quite rare to get a torque convertor shudder from a standing start. I'm not saying it's not possible...

I'm just thinking about expanding your options; the richer fuel mixture delivered to a cold engine is easier to fire. Don't jump to expensive conclusions when you could be looking at something as simple as a spark plug misfiring under load. Doublecheck your plugs and wires!

RE: Tranny Issue????

Frankie is right now that I reread the post, every time I read shudder I think trans fluid. However a lot of people mistook trans shutter for an other problem. A lot of people have had shuttering due to bad plug wires, when was the last time they were changed?

RE: Tranny Issue????

Mine used to do the same thing, shuddering like that at about the same speed. Then one day there was a loud bang while it was shuddering and now the only gear that works is reverse :) . Mine would do it when it shifted into 2nd gear and also if I started out in 2.

Its the forward clutch seals. I had the same problem. They wear out, and dont hold capacity.

I went through the exact same thing. 94 Mark VIII.
The bad news is, if your forward clutch seals are leaking, your transmission is most likely needing an over-haul anyway. The good news is, for less money, you can buy a slightly used 98+ tranny. Quite simply, less than $800, and then you have to change some minor components(TCC solenoid, MLPS, and re-pin the wiring connector to make the newer circuit board type electronics work with your older tranny harness.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that is what it sounds like to me.

Good luck, and if you do decide to do a late-model tranny sweap, I am willing to help you big time. I have done 3 now, and they all work flawlessly.

I spent less than $800 total for a fully JMOD'd 98+ tranny, with other "jery spec" internals, TCC solenoid, MLPS, fluid, line-flush, and a new Mach 1 torque converter.
