Tranny issue.........

I'm guessing it's either low on fluid or the fluid needs changed, but when I take a hard right, the tranny feels like it goes back to 1st gear and then you start accelerating and it runs up to about 4500 rpms and then shifts a few seconds later. Also, sometimes if you have to stop hard, it feels like it went to neutral, then you go to accelerate and nothing happens until the fluid catches up and then bam. It's going. And as of like 2 days ago, when driving around 25 mph, you can see and feel the rpms fluctuate a couple hundred rpms, like it's slipping and the grabbing. Maybe the filter is clogged?

You may want to upgrade to a 96+ style pan and filter. It prevents the condition you're describing.

Also if the fluid is no longer red and or has more than 30k miles on it... time to change it.

....it's really easy to check the fluid level.....

It checks full both hot and cold. How do you check it hot? Maybe I'm doing it wrong. My dodge ram checked full for 2 years even though it was leaking in three spots and then randomly one day I checked it and wasn't touching the dipstick and was 2 quarts low.

The fluid is pretty red, but I don't know when or if the previous owner ever had it changed. I'm going to take it in to have it flushed next week. Hopefully that'll clear it up. I don't think it's got mercon in it so I'm gonna have them drain the converter too and re-fill it with mercon v.

I just read in another thread that the filter sometimes falls off, allowing it to suck air around corners. This sounds like another possibility. :)

Get the new style pan... they are still pretty cheap. It should solve your problem. It has a specifically designed bump in it.

I want to do the pan swap also. Is it a '96 mark, mustang or t-bird pan? What will be the capacity with the new pan?

Mine does the fluctuating rpm's too and I just had it rebuilt. It bugs the heck out of me!

My fluid is red but to me it smells funny, I don't know if it's burnt, but it smells funny.

Mercon V has a peculiar smell to it... fresh fluid smells sweet. I have seen burned fluid only once... in a mark i was checking out... and it was brown and thick... smelled nasty also.

I am pretty sure the 97 t birds had the different style pan already. My 98 crown vic has the same one also. It is pretty easy to tell them apart.

Here is the new style it should have that bump in the bottom. Don't forget to use the new style filter also.

Those symptoms are usually the beginning of the end. Iv'e heard of people flushing it and making it go away, but usually not. Prepare for a taste of the mark viii's better idea's.

Is it possible that the tranny cooler lines in the radiator are clogged enough to cause low pressure, causing it to slip at lower rpm's? Or maybe I just got a bad torque converter.

Yes that is possible, but to be honest its not likely. You can try to blow em out with some nitrogen or "shop air" but its just a shot in the dark. But who knows, it may drive like that for a while before it leaves you on the side of the road.
