Tranny problems shifting, also tips for rebuild place in SF Bay

When shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, the transmission "jumps", it feels like somebody is pushing the car from behind.

Took it to the transmission shop, was quoted $1500 for a full rebuild after the guy opened the pan and said he saw metal scraping.

Any suggestions for

a) a shop that would do the work for cheaper but does a good job rebuilding around here (my regular shop doesn't do tranny rebuilds too well, they just stick in used ones)
b) maybe this isn't a full tranny problem

Car has only 50k miles on it, so figure rebuild is a decent way to go.

Thanks :)

50k is way early for a transmission to crap out. Take a look at the 1-2 Accumulator and change it to the upgraded design (check the FAQs for more information). Also change the transmission fluid to Mercon V and add a cooler.

If it's a 1-2 accumulator swap, and a complete refill with Mercon V, we can do that for you at our shop in Santa Rosa. The problem with transmissions is, there is no way to tell if there is anything else going on.

Typically, if it is the old-style 1-2 shift accumulator acting up(very common on any pre-98 tranny) it will have a delayed shift that can end in a very firm shift...in otherwords, the trans will hang on to first gear a bit longer than it should, and then when it finally does shift in to second, the shift will be pretty firm.

if this seems to fit your symptoms, let me know. I would be more than happy to schedule you in for a tranny service, and replacement of the 1-2.

You can either get your own parts, or we'll be ahppy to get them for you. Our shop is in Santa Rosa off Piner rd.

you can email me, or PM me if you'd like as well.
