WHILE ON VACATION OVER THE 4TH I WAS CRUISING AT ABOUT 70 WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET WHEN THE TRANSMISION DECIDED TO DOWNSHIFT AND THE RPMS JUMPED WAY UP
WHEN I TAPPED THE BRAKE AND KICKED THE CRUISE OFF EVERYTHING WENT BACK TO NORMAL
ALSO NOW MY O/D BUTTON DOESNT WORK
CAR JUST FLIPPED 150K
HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM OR KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT

Sounds like the infamous MLPS (manual lever position sensor). People are getting that a lot nowadays.

Auto parts stores call it a neutral safety switch and they sell for anywhere from $22 to $45. The MLPS is located on the driver side of the tranny itself, and takes about 30-60 minutes to replace. Only basic tools are required. More info can be found by doing a search for "MLPS".

RE: trans downshifting with cruise on

I WAS IN EASTERN KY. WHERE THERE ARE HILLS
WHEN IT ACTED UP I WAS IN A SPOT THAT WAS ON A DOWNGRADE BUT IT WASNT NOTHING TO STEEP JUST A GRADUAL GRADE

RE: trans downshifting with cruise on

then the car probably downshifted to slow you down.

since the compute can't control the brakes.

And take it easy on the caps, it's like shouting.

RE: trans downshifting with cruise on

wasnt that much of a grade for it to pick up that much speed
it happened on the way home --it went all weekend long on alot steeper grades and never did it
somthing acted up ----think im going to change the nutral switch

RE: trans downshifting with cruise on

did you have the cruise control on when you were on the steeper grades?

how long was the grade?

That all makes a difference.

If it's done it "once" and isn't causing a problem now, i wouldn't start throwing parts at it.
