TRANS fluid

How many quarts does it take when changing the filter, I can't for the life of me remember. Just want to make sure I have enough.

Fill to the COLD mark on the dipstick, then drive till warm....check and fill as necessary.... while you have the pan off, clean and dry good and install a drain valve.

Start with 4 1/2, start the car, put it through the gears (reverse/drive) until each engages, leave it in neutral, add 1/2 to 1 more quart.

Do NOT put 11 quarts in it!!

Didn't even end up pulling the pan down, some of the bolts got rounded off, didn't feel like screwing with it. Pulled the drain plug out of the converter and drained out about 6 quarts, which was all i had.

Fun!

yeah, fun is right. my car needs a lot of work right now. might be looking for a better one....maybe a genII to keep it company.

Quick question...I dont know the maint history on my trans(135k). I just want to drop the pan and give it some fresh mercon v..Problem is i dont know whats in there now. The fluid looks ok but smells a little burnt, nothing crazy. Assuming it has mercon or m v in it can i just put in mv?

I'll do a full drain down the road sometime($$)..For now i just want to take a little out(4-5qt) and put a little new back in. Freshen it up a little.

Mercon and Mercon V are compatible. But the cost isn't THAT bad...I'd change it all seeing how it smells burnt.

At 135 i dont expect to get much more out of it. I'd be thrilled if it lasted to 160k. I just started working again so until i have enough for a trans i'm not going to mess with it much. Prob in 3-4 months i'll pick up a 98+ unit and get it ready(jmod fluid ect) for when mine fails.

I believe the 98 already HAS the jmod.......

Ummm... no.

While the '98 transmission has many upgrades over the earlier years, it is NOT considered to have the "Jmod". The Jmod is primarily the opening of ports in the valvebody gasket to facilitate more firm shifts along with other improvements.

Mercon and Mercon V are not compatible. You can use V in the trans, but it must have a full flush. There are fluids on the market that satisfy the requirements of Mercon V, but are not straight synthetics.

Mercon V is not a full synthetic, it is a blend.
