Trans Problem

Looking at a 97 LSC 140K miles. Transmission seems to not want to engage anything other than first and second. Apparently it shifted down in transit but will now not shift up in to third and beyond. Reverse still works fine. No symptons before this happened. Any ideas out there? Car seems to be in great shape and the dollar value is very negotiable but not sure if I want to buy it and put a trans in it right away. Car has been parked now for a year. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.
 
Nope, this is the way mine has died also.

Lack of 3-4 gears is the most common way a 4R70W fries.

I have yet to hear of "bad/old fluid" causing transmission issues besides the torque converter shudder.
 
Check for engine braking in manual 2nd. It's most likely not there. Also, does it neutral out when upshifting or does it stay in 2nd with selector in D ?

Buy it if not let me know where it is ;) I have couple 98 transmissions which will be an upgrade for this car. Cheap ;)

Well you have given me the info I need to work with. I am going to start negotiating the price now based on a tranny swap. As far as I know it just stays in second with the selector in D. I am based in Toronto Canada so a " cheap trans" might not be so cheap with shipping. Any ideas on how much and how to ship a tranny to me?
