Trans slipping

Hello,

I got a 2002 lincoln ls V8. My transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd gear usually when accelerating medium to fast. When I accelerate slowly it doesn't usually slip. I have been having this problem since my car had 83,000 miles and it now has 125,000 miles. I have taken it to 2 different dealerships and they couldn't tell me what was wrong with it. I believe it didn't slip when one of the trans guys at the dealership drove it so they didn't know what was wrong. I have never changed my trans oil. I called the dealership and they told me you don't have to for an ls and I don't know how to check the oil because there is no dipstick. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There HAS to be a way to change the tranny fluid.... even if you have to drop the pan to do it! If your Lincoln dealer doesn't know how to do it, stay far-far away from that dealership! I'd be trying another dealership....Stick around here...someone will be by to let you know for sure!

Yeah I'll defintely have to go to another dealer. I want to change the oil even if that isn't what is causing the trans to slip.

Tranny oil change...

Tranny oil change...

Just had my tranny oil changed 2 weeks ago on my LS 2003 with 52k but not at the dealer. They also put an additive that really helped. It shifts more smoothly now. Also had my differentiel oil changed at the same time. According to my mechanic, Ford's oil is no good, so have it checked...

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to get my transmission oil changed tommorow from a private shop. Will let you know if that fixes the problem.

Tell them to add a "Friction Modifier" such as a differential additive, this will help your slipping issue.

Also....if you can afford it, have them do a complete fluid exchange and add Mercon 5, or atleast do a torque converter drain. This will get about 80% of the old crappy fluid out.

I changed the trans oil but its still slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear. They didn't put any additives though. It might have helped. I was thinking though this must be something wrong with the trans itself. If it was something with the oil wouldn't it slip between other gears as well? I had it changed before i read your thread J. Otherwise I probably would have told them to add some. Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it.

Changing the fluid is kinda a last attempt fix. Usually if it comes to the point where the transmission is slipping it already too late. :( And that, my friend, is why they tell you that you don't "need" to change the fluid for 100k miles......so you'll take it to them when it fails.

Yeah that is what I was afraid of . I have always changed my trans oil on my other cars. Since I bought this one the dealer told me you don't have to they said it should last the life of the car. Didn't really make sense to me but since there is no dipstick or a way for a regular consumer to check it I took there word. :frown:
