hey i know some of yal with the stall converters have put a trans temp gauge in your car. What i need help with is where to put the sending unit. I know someone here put inline with the trans cooler but how did you do that. Any pics or info on this install would help a lot thanks.

RE: trans temp gauge

On my '93 I installed the temp gauge sending unit in the tranny cooler return line with a brass tee and fittings supplied with the gauge kit I picked up at a local rice... errr, autoparts supply. ;) Sorry, no pics.

RE: trans temp gauge

i drilled and tapped a hole in my aluminum deep pan for the little sender for the trans gauge. works great and no leaks.

RE: trans temp gauge

hey i welded a bung in the side of my stock pan on the driver front corner but i forgot about the exhaust running right there. so i just put a pipe plug in the bung i welded in because i thought i might get a false reading. Will the exhaust give me a false reading on the sending unit? If if will i have another idea (see pic) sorry if the pic seems kinda childish but it would he hard to explain my idea. but basically i'm going to cut the cooler line where it goes into the tranny and put a brass tee in the line. the tee will be used like a elbow with a extra outlet witch will be "plugged" by the sending unit. I'm wondering will this will work or will the tee restrict fluid flow too much it is a 1/4 inch brass tee. Which line on the radiator is the hot line and which is the cool line?

Thanks guys for all your help and for suffering through my childish drawings.

RE: trans temp gauge

oh i forgot to say the brass tee will have pipe nipples on it for rubber hose to be clamped to. The other end of the rubber hose will be clamped to the cut ends of the stock cooler lines. Ive heard that hose clamps will hold the pressure but Ive also ben told that there is too much pressure in the lines for the hose clamps? What do you guys think will the clamps hold the pressure?

RE: trans temp gauge

On mine, I put the run of the tee straight thru to allow full fluid flow. The sending unit was in the branch of the tee with a reducer bushing such that the tip of the sending unit was barely in the flowstream.

Aeroquip is a fitting manufacturer we use at work. They have hose fittings that are known to work without the need for hose clamps. A good seal is more a design/application issue than a hose clamp issue. Due to the small clamp size, only so much clamping force can be developed. Use the correct size fittings, hose and clamps and you should have no issue.

RE: trans temp gauge

hey while i had the motor and trans out i welded a bung in the side of the trans pan. What i did not think about is exhaust clearance and the sending unit is about 1/2 inch from the pipe. Would i get a false reading that close to the exhaust? I think that would be the best place for the sending unit is in the pan but I'm dumb and was no thinking about the exhaust xo . That's why I'm trying to put the sending unit in the cooler line. So now i guess i just have a drain plug in the side of my pan. Does anybody know which line in the hot line going to the stock cooler? I have a aftermarket cooler that I'm going to put on but i want the sending unit in the hot line from the tranny. Then I'm going to put the 2nd cooler in the line coming out of the stock cooler that goes back to the trans.
