Transmision has no third gear

My tranny seems not to be going into 3rd. When it should be going into 3rd the engine revs freely. if I bring the rpm's up to about 4500 it catch's again and is fine. Not sure if it catchs 3rd or goes in to 4th.
and Idea's

On another note, when I hit the breaks to slow to a stop it drops to 300 rpm or stalls out. I think that the converter is not unlocking, the car is not throwing any codes.

...but I'll bet the tranny is throwing a code, you just don't have the equipment to check it. You'll have to thake it to the dealer or tranny shop that does. But it sounds like a more severe case than mine doing pretty much the same thing....I have a '98 tranny standing by to throw in it. Mine stops doing that after the engne & tranny comes up to regular operating temps.

It's prob clutch pack (s) going bad.

Most common failure of the 4r70w is what you both are describing... the 3-4 gears not engaging... get ready for a new trans.

Why 2 grand? There's plenty of 1998 and up 4R70W for a lot less around that all you would have to do is replace it. You will need to rewire the electrical hook up and dealer even has a kit for that.

Oh boy. That 2000.00 price scares me. My car has developed a tiny delayed engagement into gear lately. It also shifts in and out of 4th/od as if its confused while im driving approx 40/50. (the top speed limit on the island is 45) what can I do to prevent the destruction of my trans? I was reading a post on this site about chips. Do they work well? I dont wanna end up like buchshot. Sorry guy. Im almost afraid to change the fluid in fears that it will get worse. that has happenned to me in the past.

The $2000 price is for a full-on racing tranny. A good used one from a '98 can be had for $500 to $700...plus $250 to $400 for installation. A low mileage '98 will give you at least 75K miles of worry-free driving.

I just not sure on which one to go with. I dont know of any builders for this tranny, My guy only does the 4R100's.

I just put a 98 Mark 8 trans in my 95 mark 8 when the original trans died.

paid less than 500 for the trans and the install was pretty straightforward.

Repinning the harness was not difficult.

All in all swapping to a 98 trans is pretty easy and in the end you'll have a much better trans than if you put a 93-97 trans in the car.

Afterwards a tune will wake up the "beast from within" without having to worry about your aging transmssion dieing from the additional torque a tune will provide.

You may be lucky... it sounds like you have an MLPS issue. This sensor only costs about $50 and it can cause the car to feel like you're in neutral when you're on the freeway.

Actually $2000 isn't a bad price for a built trans, take a look at my transmissions. http://www.blueovalchips.com/index.php?action=category&id=4 If you were to go to trans shop you'd pay the same amount for a completely stock trans. And then a used trans, you really don't know what you are getting or if it was abused.

I know of several instances where someone had flushed their trans/TC and ended up with more problems than they started with. Not saying that a flush is bad. In some cases it isn't recommended. What happens in a failing or high mileage trans during a flush is that the sludge and small particals that have accumulated inside are broken loose. They start traveling through the various parts of the trans until they get stuck again. Depending on where they get stuck they may or will cause a failure. The type of failures I've seen have been clogged or stuck open check valves in the valve body or pistons. Spool valves hanging up and sol valves sticking and then burning out.
