Transmission choices

Haven't been around here for a while. Hope all is well with everyone. The trans went in my '94 about a year ago and haven't had the time or money to do anything with it. But, I'm going to get it done next week and have a question for you guys.

My options are as follows;

Have the one in the car rebuilt for $1400;

Have a used tranny out of a '96 Grand Marquis with 70,000 miles installed for $1000;

Or have the '96 rebuilt and installed for $1400.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

RE: Transmission choices

Go buy a junkyard tranny from a '99-'02 Mustang GT. install it yourself. should cost about $500 all said and done, but it means a weekend on your back cursing.

RE: Transmission choices

I'd love to but I'm in the process of relocating and just don't have time for any "extra" cursing! I'm stuck with my three options. Any advantage to a '96 over a '94 trans or are they just as bad?!

RE: Transmission choices

The 96's had a re-designed valve body, and a slightly better torwue converter design.

But if it's a pre-98, its a waste of time. Period. For that price, you could have a Jerry-spec 98+ built.

I wouldnt do either for the prices you listed.

I bought a slightly used, fully Jmod'd 98+ tranny AND a Mach 1 TC, including shipping, less than $800. None of what your choices listed is what I would consider an option. At all.

RE: Transmission choices

buy a junkyard trans and pay a shadetree mechanic to do the swap. You could pick up a trans around here for $500 tops, and i'd put it in for you for $300, plus figure $100 in incidentals (a few sensors, some oil dry for the floor and some tranny fluid) and you're still out the door cheaper than the prices you listed. Taking it to a tranny shop is not cheap.

Better yet, take it to a shade tree tranny shop, like I did.

He not only charged a low $250 out the door, but he found some...errors...in the previous install by a "speed shop".
