TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

Hi guys, I'm new to the message board but have been using it for reference for some time but at this point I feel as though I need to ask a question.

I own a '93 black mark 8 w/ 90k on it and here's my little story;
Wednesday night, my father and I were on our way back from a cruise night and we were on the highway doing about 70 or so when the rpms when from (1600-1800) all the way up to about 3000. The car wasn't accelerating rather it was maintaining speed in what seemed to be a lower gear. This happens once every 2 or 3 months and its finally getting on my nerves. Help a newbie out :(

JK :+

If I remember correctly, its a gear position sensor issue, it feels like the car goes in neutral while you drive on the highway sometimes right?

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

Similar thing happened to my 97 mark. It happened a few times and then it finally went and I only had 1st and 2nd gear. When they opened it up the clutchs (???) for 3rd and 4th basically became welded together. I only had the car for a few weeks when it happened.

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

It feels just like it goes into neutral, I'm gonna check the fluid just to be save and when I have some more time I'll check the sensor. BTW where might I find it.

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

The MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor) may need replacement. This is what 'tells' the transmission what gear you have selected. When it fails, it may intermittently report the shifter is in Neutral, causing the symptoms of when driving on the highway it feels like it's shifting into Neutral, then it goes back into gear.

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

So I checked my fluid level, once while it was running in drive, once when it was running in park and once when it was in park and engine off. Dry as a bone all 3 times, so after I do something about that, I can check the sensor.

Thats what it was, MLPS, i was trying to remmeber it...

Note: check tranny fluid when engine is operating, and warm.

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

OK, so the fluid level is up to where it should be which has drastically improved shift quality. Over the weekend I'll take a look at the sensor and see if anthing looks amiss then I'll post back.

RE: TRANSMISSION GOING CRAZY

You may have burned what little fluid you had in there as well.

I'd replace all the fluid just in case.
