Transmission on its last toe...

Ok guys, my car is LIMPING along now, getting worse daily. The tranny is shot, and I am going to get one in a week or so. I found one from a 1997 Mark w/27K miles for $300. That seems to be a good deal. I am having trouble finding a '98 model locally for a good price. 84K miles for $850!!! I did locate one from a 1999 Ford F-150 listed as "A.T., 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W, AODE-W), 4x2" for $450, 1K miles!!! Question is will this work. Basically I am having trouble figuring out EXACTLY which trannys will fit and which wont. I am thinking of just going with the 97 because it will basically be "painless" to put in, without swapping connectors, and solenoids and the such. If anyone could shed a bit more light on this, I would really appreciate it.... I might not have the car through the summer if things go as planned, so I am trying to go the cheapest route possible!!! THANKS GUYS!!

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

Go with a '98-up, and i'd even say get a '99 or '00 trans. I'd watch out for a truck trans because it might have a longer output shaft. I'm not sure on that. 5.4 trans's work and are stronger but i believe you have to change the main control.

We're putting an '00 GT trans in my friends thunderbird right now. You have to change your VSS, OSS, MLPS, and TCC solenoid over to the new trans, and re-pin the connector. Not that tough, and it's a better trans.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

I am also wondering what is involved in swapping a 99-04 Mustang GT 4R70W into the Mark VIII. Do you just swap your VSS, OSS, MLPS, and TCC solenoid from your tranny to the new one and that's it? Would I need to get my SCT chip reburned?

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

As far as i know, that's all there is to it. I checked specifically for an '00, though. I think at some point in '03 or '04, they stopped putting the speedo gears on the output shaft, so look for a '99-'02 trans.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

I just installed the truck trans in mine. Basically the exact same thing you mentioned in the first post. (Same mileage, yr and cost also) You do need to put your early version of TCC solenoid in there. Should have a black connector. Also, you would have to put in a car valve body in there. I was trying to follow the Jerry thesis on tccoa for mine, and ordered a brand new 96 VB. That adds another $250 to the cost though, and you probably would be better off just reinstalling your 94 VB on there, I kind of doubt that it will matter that much. Just clean it out real good, keep track of your checkballs and filters, and make sure the balls aren't worn. As long as it is a 4x2 trans it is a direct swap in terms of size and shaft length. Any trans with decent internals (Mechanical diode 98 and later) will require some electronics swapping, but it is not difficult. You would have to repin the connector as well. There is plenty of info out there to guide you through all that. Also, if you go with the later model trans and need to use your 94 valvebody, you'll need a little shim kit, because the alignment holes are slightly larger on the late model cases. www.mn12performance.com has a good tech writeup about all the differences from year to year. Takes some re-reads to digest it all but it is very helpful.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

I believe there were some valve body changes at some point. So it might be better to get a newer style car valve body if you go with a 5.4 trans.

If you have a 4.6 truck trans you may not need to worry about it though.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

Ok, I assume that even if I get the '97 model I have to change the TCC solenoid anyway?? Also, is the OSS sensor on the outside like the VSS?? I wonder why the VB wouldn't work, and yes the VB was changed in 1996.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

Jerry's thesis says not to use the truck valve body. If you are trying to do this on the cheap, I would recommend just swapping in your old vb after inspection and/or jmodding. There's a good article about this swap by Silver95Bird on tccoa. I forgot, you also need to swap on your year MLPS sensor and shift selector arm from your car, since that is different from the truck one.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

Replacing your valve body with anything else that 99+ VB is pointless.

They're are pretty much the same. The real changes to VB happpened in 99, while the trans internals changed in 98. 2000 mustang gt trans seems like the best choice.

RE: Transmission on its last toe...

Well, the tranny was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at 2:34PM. Cause of death: Unknown. Autopsy not to be preformed. Will be transplanting in the 1997 this week. Going with it because of price, and I am probably not going to keep the car through the year. Thanks all for your help and input. I think with the 1997 I only have to swap the MLPS and also the TCC solenoid if I'm not mistaken. Beacuse the resistances are different.
