Hey folks, could use some help. My 1990 Mark VII won't go into overdrive. When it gets to that gear, it is as if it is in neutral. It only has 42,000 miles, problem started all at once. Any thaughts? Thanks.;(

RE: Transmission poblem

Possible Source(s):
§ Overdrive circuit leakage or blocked passage.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Check valve body bolt torque.

Possible Source(s):
§ NOTE: Burnt overdrive band will help to confirm leakage in the overdrive circuit. Replacing only the overdrive band without finding the cause will result in a repeat service.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Overdrive servo cover seals leaking. Replace seals.
§ Overdrive servo piston seal leaking. Replace seal.
§ Overdrive servo rod excessive clearance in case. Replace inoperative/worn parts.
§ Overdrive servo cover cracked/porous. Coat cover with fluid. Apply air to overdrive servo, apply passage using Servo Piston Remover T80L-77030-B or equivalent. Observe to see if air bubbles are present on overdrive servo cover. Replace cover if air bubbles are present.

Possible Source(s):
§ Overdrive servo piston not applying overdrive band/band not applying.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Overdrive servo case apply passage blocked. Air pressure test. Replace case if necessary.

Possible Source(s):
§ Overdrive band mislocated.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Overdrive servo piston not seated to the band end seat. Service.
§ Overdrive band not seated to anchor pin. Service.

Possible Source(s):
§ Converter damper plate and hub fracturing the weld and/or rivets fatiguing, or the damper springs breaking.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Perform converter damper/hub assembly weld check procedure. Use Converter Checking Tool T83L-7902-A or equivalent. Replace converter if shaft turns more than two degrees or if there is a grinding noise while applying 50 lb-ft torque.

Possible Source(s):
§ Direct driveshaft splines distorted.

Action(s) to Take:
§ Check splines on both ends of the direct driveshaft. Check splines in direct clutch cylinder. Replace direct driveshaft and hardware that splines to it for distortion.

RE: Transmission poblem

Thanks for the response. I was hoping it might be a wire that came off somewhere, or a switch not engaging sinc it happened all at once.

RE: Transmission poblem

Check the transmission cable where it attaches to the throttle body, most likely the grommet has failed that holds the cable on the throttle body lever. If this is the case, do not drive it as it can burn up the transmission quick. You can replace it with a new style one that holds up much better.

Is the 'proper' one yellow? I recall the one on mine being white? It was solid and non-deterioting so I left it as is and called it good.
[/div]
Your's was white because the car received regular maintenance and had an early polyurethane replacement by Ford. The stock grommet was a cream colored hard plastic that would turn yellow with heat and age and eventually wear away and crack or disintegrate.

Today's replacement is a brass bushing and cotter pin.

My 85 T-Bird was similar. I replaced that grommet with a standard white nylon washer that snapped over the knob. Pretty sure that type of washer will never fail.

That's the one, though I doubt it's immortality. Every time we accelerate or decelerate, there are pounds of pressure put not only on the bushing but the cable head also.

I have yet to loose the cable head but it too is bound to happen.
