Transmission problems

So i went down to California to pick up a gen 2, well after driving 20 minutes I lost 3rd gear. It acts like its going in to neutral and stays there until I shift it to 2nd or 1st manually. When driving normally it will stop at 40 mph and act like it drops into neutral but if I WOT it from a stop it will get up there to speed in 2nd gear but when I let off it will drop out of gear and act like neutral. What could be wrong? I'm back home here in Maryland since I have to work tonight so I couldn't wait for the shop the fix it. Just wondering what could be wrong, they just called me and told me they are putting a 97 Crown Vic transmission in it with 74k miles on it so it should be good to go when I got back down there later this month. MY QUESTION is what is the problem is this common in the Marks?

+1 on the direct clutch.

Is that the car you waited so long to pick up ? I'd pass on it if I were you.

Direct clutch burn is typically due to lack of maintenance and serious abuse. I would only think the rest of the car is in similiar shape.

...and I'd put in a '98 tranny, NOT the '97. The '98 is a MUCH better tranny and prob could be purchased for the same $.

Don't know what you are talking about I put a deposit on the car about a month ago. Anyways I seriously doubt it was abused. The interior is in very good shape it was driven by some older lady and her husband has a 1993 that was comletely flawless. Only thing that it does need is paint and the rear window molding (which looks pretty bad) but thats because it was in southern california its whole life. This will be my first Mark VIII but My dad has a 93 94 and 98 and I have been driving his 93 around for a while.

Sounds like the clutches to me. I Would get it fixed before you burn the drum or damage anything further. You have now idea what is floating around in the tranny right now.
